Strange News: Pea plant grows inside man's lung (Auckland, "David Lim")

A Massachusetts man who was rushed to hospital with a collapsed lung came home with an unusual diagnosis: a pea plant was growing in his lung.
Ron Sveden had been battling emphysema for months when his condition deteriorated.


He was steeling himself for a cancer diagnosis when X-rays revealed the growth in his lung.


Doctors believe that Mr Sveden ate the pea at some point, but it "went down the wrong way" and sprouted.


"One of the first meals I had in the hospital after the surgery had peas for the vegetable. I laughed to myself and ate them," Mr Sveden told a local Boston TV reporter.


Mr Sveden said the plant was about half an inch (1.25cm) in size.


"Whether this would have gone full-term and I'd be working for the Jolly Green Giant, I don't know. I think the thing that finally dawned on me is that it wasn't the cancer," Mr Sveden said.


He is currently recovering at home with his wife Nancy, who joked that God must have a sense of humour.

Dread of the unknown hung in the air as Lynn France typed two words into the search box on Facebook: the name of the woman with whom she believed her husband was having an affair.

Click. And there it was, the stuff of nightmares for any spouse, cuckolded or not. Wedding photos.


At Walt Disney World, no less, featuring her husband literally dressed as Prince Charming.


His new wife, a pretty blonde, was a glowing Sleeping Beauty, surrounded by footmen.


"I was numb with shock, to tell you the truth," says France, an occupational therapist from USA.


"There was like an album of 200 pictures on there. Their whole wedding."


France, 41, was not completely blindsided by her Facebook discovery, which happened in January 2009.


That fall, she had grown suspicious when her husband began taking frequent business trips, even leaving the day the couple's newborn son came home from the hospital.


Once, she found his passport at home when he was supposed to be in China for business.


In October, before leaving for another trip, her husband left a hotel website up on the couple's computer screen.


"So I actually went there with a girlfriend, just to see for myself for sure," France says.


"He was there with this girlfriend. I said, 'Hey, I'm his wife. We've got a baby."'


The woman told France that she was engaged to France's husband.


"Sure enough, they were registered for a wedding at Target," France says.


A girlfriend recommended checking the woman's Facebook page, France says.


There, France found evidence of an unfolding relationship that she still couldn't wrap her head around. Overwhelmed with two young children, she confronted her husband.


She says he told her he wouldn't actually go through with the wedding.


It wasn't until she saw the wedding photos that she finally began divorce proceedings.


Lynn's husband, John France, does not deny that he has remarried. Rather, he simply is insisting that he was never married to Lynn in the first place.


Lynn and John France were married in July 2005 in a seaside wedding on Italy's Amalfi Coast, having organized the event through Regency San Marino, which coordinates weddings for couples looking to get hitched in Italy.


On the company's website, Lynn is still the first radiant bride whose portrait appears in a gauzy veil, the brilliant blue sea behind her.


If that wedding was a fraud, it was news to Lynn. "If that were true, then he's lied to the IRS," Zashin says. "He's lied to insurance companies. Banks."

Today as I passed by Mt Eden, I decided to drop by the Circus Circus Cafe, 447 Mt Eden Road, Mt Eden, Auckland, New Zealand. Tel: (09) 6233833.  Their website is located here.

The setting, the mood and ambiance is simply marvelous.  The Flat White (my favourite) taste really great, the staff is friendly and very professional too.  To top it of, the decoration along with the color theme makes you feel like you are in jovial mood as a kid at the Ringling Circus of the by gone days.  Apparently the business owner had done a long and careful planning the deck out his cafe.

You can see the giant size lions (made of wood), the monkeys, the acrobats swinging across the ceiling.  Sipping my coffee and drawn in to deep relaxation; suddenly the song "How Bizzare" by the late OMC singer Pauly Fuemana started to play in my mind.  OMC (Otara Millionaire Club) originates from Otara, South Auckland, New Zealand.  This song some how fits the atmosphere of the Circus Circus Cafe.  Believe me, you will not feel bizarre after you had your first visit here.

During rainy days or lazy days even happy day; I would highly recommend you to visit the Circus Circus Cafe to slow yourself down a bit and to catch up with the pace of life.

Men with iPhones are more attractive to women than their counterparts who don’t use the Apple Inc. device, according to a survey by a British cellphone retailer.

Among 1,500 women surveyed by Phones 4U Ltd., 54 per cent said they would be likelier to date a man with an iPhone, the Newcastle-under-Lymebased company said.

The iPhone has helped Apple to surpass analysts’ earnings estimates. The company said Wednesday that second-quarter net income almost doubled to $3.07 billion US, boosted by the shipment of 8.75 million iPhones.

About two million iPhones have been sold in Britain, with 75 per cent of the touch-screen devices going to men aged 18 to 40, according to Phones 4U.

Downloads of dating applications for smartphones exceeded 250,000 last year, Phones 4U said.

In the survey, 37 per cent said owning an iPhone, which is typically marketed under a long-term contract, makes a man seem more reliable and a better candidate for a second date.

The Best Coffee at Starbucks Isn't on the Menu (drinks, people, latte, flat, white, Auckland)

Like most office drones, it’s hard to pass by a Starbucks on the way to work without stopping for a cup of America’s finest. But a new trend has baristas cringing and customers rejoicing: the Instant Brew. It’s not on the menu, but most baristas will make you one if the store isn’t too busy.

The Instant Brew is when baristas brew coffee directly into the cup and not into a giant vat of joe. It’s also known as a pour-over or single-drop. This trend is becoming more popular among small specialty coffee houses, and it produces a stronger brew similar to a French press, but without the grit.

There's a few more items from Starbucks which may further piss off your local barista.

• The Short Cappuccino: A cheaper, better cappuccino served in a smaller eight-ounce cup. This is a more European-size portion of the drink without the extra milk most baristas use to fill the tall cups. Most foodies agree that a proper cappuccino should be one part espresso, one part steamed milk and one part foam.
  
• Biscotti Frappuccino: buy an individual biscotto and ask your barista to blend it into any Frappuccino drink for a crunchy treat.
• Red Eye: a shot of espresso in regular drip coffee
• Black Eye: two shots of espresso in regular drip coffee

• Crunch Berry Frappuccino: a strawberry-and-cream Frappuccino with hazelnut flavoring; it tastes just like Crunch Berries cereal.
• London Fog: Earl Grey tea blended with vanilla flavoring
• Zebra Mocha (aka Penguin Mocha): a combination white-chocolate/chocolate mocha
• Red-Tux Mocha (aka Bleeding Penguin): a Zebra Mocha plus raspberry flavoring

Starbucks is also testing new brewing methods in key markets. Their concept store, Roy Street Coffee and Tea, also serves beer and wine and creates little heart-shaped designs in their cappuccinos. More importantly they offer custom brew coffee using the elusive Clover coffee machine, an $11,000 device that auto-adjusts its temperature and brew time to the individual bean. If that isn’t expensive enough, there is still the $20,000 siphon coffee maker imported by Ueshima Coffee Company which Starbucks has yet to offer. To experience the siphon’s cold brew you must visit specialty shops like Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco.

HTC 1 Future Phone: Specs and Release Date Unknown

|HTC has been known for releasing beautifully designed phones. With this, another fabulous designed mobile phone is set to fascinate us in the future. It is HTC 1 as designed by the great designer who conceptualized the said design especially for HTC named Andrew Kim. The HTC 1 looks so simple but stylish. You will surely love its elegant design which is built with silver-plated brass body and comes with a built-in UV light which can kill germs on its surface as you charge your phone.

Known as HTC 1, the phone was built on the concept of having a single user, who is recruited for a cleaner and a more high- end approach. Looking beyond HTC 1, it seems that the design is very minimalist and that Andrew Kim has removed unnecessary design elements and made even simpler.

Andrew Kim also took time to make some improvement in its Sense UI. He took effort refining the existing widgetmania to a much simple set of icons and notifications. It has the news widget which provides quick access to your news sources and social widget which brings you the latest updates from your social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.

Ideally the HTC 1 is rumored to come up with a slightly curved touchscreen surface. It makes us think how this unique design will affect its users. The phone seems to be thick which provides ample space for a nice camera.

The HTC 1 is supposed to come with dual speakers located independently for a better experience together with a kickstand making it an ideal media device. With the kickstand, you can stand it upright as well as sideways. It has also a modern alarm clock on it. So with the stand and the alarm clock combine, you can simply transform your phone into an alarm clock.

The HTC 1 is also designed with the idea of creating a harmonized environment between its hardware and software design which is not currently present on most smartphones. And with its silver-plated body one can be assured that it is durable, smooth and has the ability to lasts for a long time.

The HTC 1 is also equipped with an integrated messaging feature that brings SMS, MSN, Facebook and other messaging sources into a single stream which makes messaging easier for its users.

With these features included in HTC 1 and its very elegant yet simple design accompanied by a high qualityperformance, it looks that the HTC 1 is something to watch out for. Release date has not yet been announced but expected to be around early next year in time to compete with the iPhone 4G.

Use Your iPhone to Start Your Car (tech, news, gadgets, apps, Apple, Auckland, "Abby Tehnology"

The Apple iPhone, by design, is meant to be an all-in-one device, but who would have guessed it would be capable of doing some of the things it can? A few months ago we reviewed Rev for iPhone, which allows you to measure and graph many in-car statistics and analytics in real time, among many other features.

Viper Security has just announced a new iPhone app that allows you to start, lock, unlock, pop the trunk, arm security, or even find your car in a parking lot from anywhere you and your car have cell phone signal.

The system is called “Viper SmartStart,” and uses a downloadable app from the iTunes App Store to connect with the SmartStart system installed in your car. The system isn’t cheap, however. If you already have a remote start installed in your car, you can save some cash and just get the SmartStart module, which runs $299. If not, expect to fork over $499 for the whole system, which does not include installation at Best Buy, or the $30/year service charge (first year is free.)

This is a unique system, and might have some unexpected benefits. Standardkey fobs have a very limited range, and the Viper SmartStart system’s range is virtually unlimited, as long as you have cell phone coverage. For example, let’s say you’re at the grocery store and lock your keys in your car. You could simply unlock the car with your iPhone, or even have your spouse at home unlock the car for you. Another benefit is that you’re able to start your car and warm it up in the winter from anywhere. If you’re in the office, for example, start the car while you’re at your desk so it’s warm when you get to it. An interesting and useful system, though a bit pricey.

Turn Your iPhone into a High-Powered Performance Tool (Abby Technology, Auckland, Jailbreak)

When the iPhone was introduced in June 2007, we knew it was revolutionary. It combined a phone, MP3 player, video player, internet browser, hand-held game console, and GPS all in one device, and did it with a beautiful and slick interface. What we didn’t expect, however, is that a new batch of creative developers would create applicationsto turn it into much more than what it already is.

A perfect example of this an app that turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into an automotive analytics platform that can provide the same OBDII-reading functionality of high-end test equipment costing far more, and it can do it wirelessly. To use this app to its full potential, however, you will need to buy a piece of hardware to connect to your OBDII port in all 1996 or newer cars. We used the excellent new PLX Kiwi Wifi. This tiny $150 device connects directly to your OBDII port (usually under your steering column,) and sends a Wifi signal to your iPhone, transmitting all sorts of useful data for you to analyze. In my experience, it was very easy to set up from beginning to end.

With the Rev app and Kiwi Wifi working together now, you can read a wealth of information regarding your vehicle stats. One feature is an engine code reader if your check engine light is on, which will also clear the codes for you, saving you money at a repair shop and helping to diagnose issues. The coolest thing about Rev is the real-time reading and display of all sorts of stats, including:
