Want to have an iPhone but for some reason you can't get your hands on one and instead have an iPod Touch? Then you're in luck, some random company based in Guangzhou, China has made a device that allows you to turn your iPod Touch into something that works like an iPhone. You've heard that right, the guys in China did it first.

What the device basically does is allowing the addition of a SIM card so that you can call with your iPod Touch. In order to do this, the device includes a speaker on top so that you can hear the calls, a SIM card slot, a baseband chip, a dock connector port and a "vibration motor" (possibly for silent mode or a similar functionality). Take note that it doesn't support 3G.

As with unofficial Apple products, you need to jailbreak your iPod Touch to gain access to the full features that the Apple Peel offers. The device will then install 2 applications, "Yosion" and "YsSMS". 


As you can see, the user interface of Yosion has striking similarities with the phone application of the iPhone.

The SMS functionality is also similar to the iPhone. 

You can then import your contacts from the SIM card to the on-board memory.

 Overall, this is a nifty device to say the least. The question is, what will Apple do once they knew the existence of such device.

Apple iPhone 4G Power User Tip: Way to type faster on iPhone (Abby Technology Limited)

Step 1: Use landscape mode
Whenever possible, type in landscape mode, which offers a larger keyboard and more space between keys. Landscape is available in all major applications if you have an iPhone 3G S or have upgraded to the newest operating system.


Step 2: Type with both thumbs
Using your index finger to type is for beginners. Increase your efficiency by using both thumbs to tap the letters on your virtual keyboard. With some practice, thumb-typing will become automatic.


Step 3: Look at what you're typing
Instead of looking at the letters as you type, look at what you're typing -- it will increase your speed and accuracy. Once your thumbs know where the keys are, it won't take long to adjust.


Tip: If you touch a wrong key, slide your finger to the correct key. The letter isn't entered until you release your finger.


Step 4: Use shortcuts
Learn basic shortcuts. When starting a new sentence, simply double-tap the space bar to add a period and a space and switch your next letter to upper case. To turn caps lock on, enable Caps Lock in keyboard settings and double-tap the shift button; tap it again to turn it off.


Step 5: Learn the ABC-to-123 trick
Switching between the alphabetical and numerical keyboards takes time. Instead, press and hold down the Number key, and drag your finger to the number or punctuation mark you want to insert. When you let go, your key will be entered and you'll automatically go back to the letter keyboard.

Year 2010: SmartPhone Users to Surpass 7 Million (tech, news, report, update, statistics, Auckland)

IntoMobile has some rumors concerning the new iPad, so it appears that the iPad 2 will feature a Retina Display and 128GB of internal storage. Also, the device will pack a 7 inch display, supposedly and a camera, plus a micro or mini USB port. Launch date could be scheduled for the first quarter of 2011.
Interestingly enough, the source of this info leak, Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities mentioned that that the old iPad will be ditched in favor of the new one. How’s that for a strategy?

This is the exact reason why this application gets rated "Excellent" for concept. There is not much more you could ask for from a free texting service.
There are several other services on the iPhone which can be used for free texting, such as Google Voice. Another commonly used app is Textfree Unlimited. While these applications do offer free domestic texting on the iPhone, they do not offer service comparable to HeyWire.
The HeyWire service is quite simple to use. Signing up for an account is done upon first run of the application and you will be assigned a phone number. Phone numbers are limited to a very small area and, therefore, you will likely not be able to find a local number. This is not a big deal since the service is free.
Sending text messages to domestic numbers is just as you would expect. Simply enter the phone number or select the contact from your iPhone's address book and enter your message. Press send and your friend receives the text message as if it was sent to a regular phone. Your friends can simply text the number back and you will receive the message.

International text messaging is equally easy. Simply enter "+" and the country code, followed by the full phone number. Enter the message and press send. HeyWire supports most major cell phone carriers in most countries. Your friend will receive the text message from your USA based number. They will have to reply back to your USA number which may cost them some money, but it will always be free for you. If they happen to have a smart phone with Internet connectivity, they could consider using HeyWire as well to create completely free texting back to friends in the USA.
Messages are delivered instantly or nearly instantly. After extensive usage, no messages have been lost or failed to send, that includes several days worth the messages to international destinations such as El Salvador. Overall the service is excellent and the messages get to where they should in a timely fashion, just as if they were sent from a regular cell phone.
The HeyWire application is right on par with quality of service. The application is very easy to use, intuitive, responsive, and has many of the features which we want to see in a texting application.
There are a large number of customization options which range from setting signatures to changing the text
tone. Push notifications can be enabled or disabled, which is essential for a texting application. The HeyWire app reads your Address Book directly which is a nice feature, you won't have to worry about entering your contacts again into the app.
Messages are display similarly to the default texting application. Messages appear in a handy list, tapping one will bring up a chat style window with bubble text. Responding is just as easy as using the default iPhone texting application. When new messages come in, you are notified with a text tone. If the HeyWire app is not open, a push notification will appear with the contact name and the message. Clicking on the push notification will launch the app and bring up that conversation.
HeyWire is quite possible one of the best domestic texting apps for the iPhone, and without a doubt the best free international texting app. This app possesses many of the qualities of a paid application and the service offers outstanding quality.

There is not much left to be desired with the HeyWire application and service. Overall, it has come a long way since the initial first release and HeyWire has announced plans to add a Mac, PC and web version of the client as well. iSpoofCard
iSpoofCard is from the designers of the iSpoof App which was removed from the AppStore. iSpoofCard is a purely web-based application which allows iPhone call recording and several other features. Using iSpoofCard it is possible to change your caller ID to trick your friends, change your voice for your privacy and record calls all in one service.
iSpoofCard is a free application however the service requires a subscription. A free trial is available to test the features including the iPhone call recording however it is necessary to buy the service to continue using it. iSpoofCard is a good choice for iPhone call recording due to the simple to use web interface and easy online management of recorded calls.

 In order to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone 3G, 3GS or iPhone 4 with 4.2.1 firmware, you need to be aware of the following information.
If you are using the newer version of iPhone 3GS, then you need to use untethered jailbreak, as this is the only available solution.
This new unlock process updates the existing baseband to the newer version, i.e. 06.15 version. Once you have updated your iPhone to this newer version, you can’t downgrade to an older version. Also, as soon as you update to the newer baseband, you will void the warranty on your iPhone as Apple will come to know about it.
In future, if any critical updates arrive, then you also need to update to the newer baseband version i.e. 06.15. So, there is no harm in updating it now, unless and until, you are not looking to update your iPhone in future.
With newer firmware versions starting from 4.2.1, you will not be able to restore your iPhone to stock firmware, and you will have to use a custom ipsw file for the same.

Today's buzz is all about the Samsung Nexus S -- a still-under-wraps smartphone believed to be the successor to Google's Nexus One. According to various leaks, the Nexus S will be a "Google experience" device, meaning it'll run a stock version of Android without any of those baked-in manufacturer UIs. And, if the latest rumors prove to be true, the Samsung Nexus S will be rocking the as-of-yet-unannounced Android Gingerbread release.


While nothing official has been said about the Nexus S so far, the unofficial evidence is certainly stacking up fast. Here's a look at the latest leaks and intelligence surrounding the hotly anticipated Android device.


Samsung Nexus S: The Photos
Earlier today, tech blog Engadget posted a series of photos said to show the Samsung Nexus S out in the wild. The images depict a slim-looking black phone with rounded edges, a front-facing camera, and a "Google" logo imprinted on its back. Engadget says the pictures were taken about a month ago; the site provides no specifics, however, as to how they were obtained.


The images, it's worth noting, do match up with a mock-up created by the gang at Gizmodo a couple of weeks back (posted at the top of this page). The Giz crew says it created its mock-up based on an unnamed source's first-hand experience with the phone.


Samsung Nexus S: The Flickr Trail
The sharp-shooting gumshoes from Engadget also tracked down some pictures that appear to have been taken with Nexus S devices and then posted to Flickr and Picasa. According to Engadget, the photos all came from Google employees and are linked to smartphones with the model number GT-i9020. An FCC filing for that device includes a sketch that bears a noticeable resemblance to the phone seen in today's leaked images.


Samsung Nexus S: The Best Buy Clues
Best Buy has given us a couple of different clues about the Samsung Nexus S today. First, a banner appeared on the company's Web site advertising a "Pure Google" phone called -- you guessed it -- the Nexus S. Discovered by Android blog Phandroid, the banner stated that the Nexus S would be "available only at Best Buy this holiday season." It also featured a broken image with alternate text saying the phone would be offered on T-Mobile. Best Buy has since taken the ad down.


Another page on Best Buy's site, meanwhile, was later reported to be advertising a previously unseen Android device that matched the Nexus S profile.


There's more: Tech blog Android Police published what a tipster claims to be a snapshot of an internal Best Buy memo about the Samsung Nexus S. The memo references plans for the device to get its own dedicated display in Best Buy stores starting on November 14.


And finally, Phandroid published an alleged shot from Best Buy's computer system showing some of the specifics of the Nexus S phone.


Samsung Nexus S: Other Specs
So what about the other specs? Aside from what's already been mentioned, past leaks have predicted the Nexus S will have a 1.2GHz processor, a 5MP camera with HD video capture, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The site that published those claims -- Android blog AndroidandMe.com -- also says the phone will eventually be available on multiple carriers.


Samsung Nexus S: About That Name...
While much of the blogosphere has now taken to calling the device the Samsung Nexus S (try saying that name three times fast), bear in mind that we don't actually know what this device will ultimately be called. Earlier leaks referred to the phone as the Nexus Two. The crew from Android blog Android Central, meanwhile, believes the gadget will be known as the Samsung Elite.


Until anything official is announced, there's really no telling what the formal and final name will be.


Samsung Nexus S: Timeline and Possible Delays
Previous rumors had predicted the Samsung Nexus S (or whatever it might be called) would launch at Samsung's mobile event on November 8. That obviously didn't happen.


According to TechCrunch -- who we know would never publish unsubstantiated information -- the Samsung/Google Android device was originally set to be launched "imminently" but has now been delayed due to some sort of hardware issue.


Samsung Nexus S: The Gingerbread Story
The other wildcard in this equation is the presence of Gingerbread, Google's latest Android incarnation. The Nexus S, as mentioned above, is expected to ship with Gingerbread already installed. So where is this tasty-sounding software treat?


Android Gingerbread was widely expected to launch this week, with some rumors pointing to today -- November 11 -- as the date to watch. The day isn't over yet, but the hours are quickly ticking by, and so far there's no sign of any official Android news. Remember, too, that we heard similar rumors of Gingerbread's pending debut back in mid-October; as that instance demonstrated, these leaks don't always pan out.


Whether it lands today or not, all signs do point to Android Gingerbread being almost ready for consumption. Google set up its official Android Gingerbread statue a few weeks back. If past Android releases are any indication, that's likely a sign that some sort of announcement is on the way soon.


As for the Samsung Nexus S, it sure seems like something's a-cookin'. As for what exactly it is and when we'll be able to get our hands on it, only time will tell...stay tuned.

iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G users will be able to enjoy the benefit of an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w.


Unfortunately, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G users will have to manage with a tethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w. As Dev team had explained yesterday:


A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.


Comex is working hard to bring a untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for users with newer devices so we’ll let you know if we have any further updates.


Redsn0w will NOT hactivate or unlock your iPhone. So if you want to unlock your iPhone and currently have iOS 4.1 or lower running on your iPhone then please wait for Dev team to release PwnageTool for iOS 4.2.1 as it preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that you can use Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone. Dev team is also expected to release a new version of Ultrasn0w shortly for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. They have mentioned that the unlock for iPhone 4 users will need more effort and are not in a position to provide any further information currently.


Please remember that jailbreaking your iPhone may void its warranty so proceed with caution.

Apple iPhone iOS 4.2 Releasing: Prepare your iDevice for update (3G, 3GS, 4G, Unlock, Jailbreak, Auckland, Abby Technology Limited

Apple will release the long-awaited iOS 4.2 update later today. It will be compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, where the iPad is the highest beneficiary of all, reloaded with Multitasking, Folders, Game Center, AirPrint and AirPlay.  http://tiny.cc/ios2
 
Surely the iPad users were the most eager to get their hands on the iOS 4.2. This version will finally restore the balance between the pocket devices and the tablets. Besides the already mentioned features, the iPad is also getting everything that iOS has already brought on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

The iOS 4.2 brings AirPlay, AirPrint and a free version of Find My iDevice to all three Apple gadgets.
 
AirPlay allows direct streaming to Apple TV, while AirPrint is capable to print anything on your iDevice to the supported printers. Find My iPhone/iPod/iPad is now working without MobileMe subscription (which means free) on iOS 4.2 and won't work for iPhone 3G/3GS and earlier iPod Touches.
Find My iPhone allows you to track, lock or wipe remotely your iDevice. Despite the fact it’s intended only for the latest Apple gadgets, there is a way to activate it on the older ones too.


Let's hope the alarm bug is also fixed within the new firmware update.

Can I stop iPhone iOS apps from running in the background? (user, tips, tool, trick, Auckland, Apple iPhone

Apps can be designed to run in the background on iOS 4. Some users have reported battery drain or other issues and they suspect some apps might be the culprit. Icons for recently opened apps appear in the fast app switching (or multitasking) dock.


Apps can't be prevented from running in the background, however you can quit them by following these steps:


1. To access the dock double-click the Home button.


2. Swipe left and right to see all of the icons for recently used apps. Some of these may be running in the background. Others are in a suspended state.


3. To quit any processes and remove the icon from the dock, hold down on any icon in the multitasking dock.


4. The icons will wiggle and a red circle appears on each icon. Tap the red circle to quit the app

3G network brings internet to Mount Everest climbers (tech, news, report, update, record, Auckland, Apple, iPhone, Repair)

Mount Everest climbers can now surf the internet and make video calls through a 3G network, Nepalese telecoms firm Ncell says.

The company has installed eight 3G base stations along the route to Everest base camp.

The wireless network could help thousands of tourists who visit Mount Everest every year, Ncell claims.

Climbers and trekkers in the Everest region have so far relied on satellite phones and a voice-only mobile network.

Ncell, which is owned by the Swedish company TeliaSonera, says its highest 3G base station is near Everest base camp at 5,200 metres (17,000 ft).

The coverage would reach the summit of the world's highest mountain, company head Pasi Koistinen, said.

He added that this had not been tested yet.

The 3G network will help climbers and trekkers stay in touch with their families and trip organisers, Mr Koistinen said.

It will also enable them to receive weather reports and safety information while they are climbing.

Around 3,000 people have climbed to the Everest summit since Edmund Hillary first conquered the peak in 1953 and used runners to carry messages from his expedition to the nearest telegraph office.

Less than one third of Nepal's population have access to telecommunication services.

TeliaSonera announced that it would invest more than $100m (£63m) in the next year to increase mobile coverage in the country.
