Want to have an iPhone but for some reason you can't get your hands on one and instead have an iPod Touch? Then you're in luck, some random company based in Guangzhou, China has made a device that allows you to turn your iPod Touch into something that works like an iPhone. You've heard that right, the guys in China did it first.

What the device basically does is allowing the addition of a SIM card so that you can call with your iPod Touch. In order to do this, the device includes a speaker on top so that you can hear the calls, a SIM card slot, a baseband chip, a dock connector port and a "vibration motor" (possibly for silent mode or a similar functionality). Take note that it doesn't support 3G.

As with unofficial Apple products, you need to jailbreak your iPod Touch to gain access to the full features that the Apple Peel offers. The device will then install 2 applications, "Yosion" and "YsSMS". 


As you can see, the user interface of Yosion has striking similarities with the phone application of the iPhone.

The SMS functionality is also similar to the iPhone. 

You can then import your contacts from the SIM card to the on-board memory.

 Overall, this is a nifty device to say the least. The question is, what will Apple do once they knew the existence of such device.

Apple iPhone 4G Power User Tip: Way to type faster on iPhone (Abby Technology Limited)

Step 1: Use landscape mode
Whenever possible, type in landscape mode, which offers a larger keyboard and more space between keys. Landscape is available in all major applications if you have an iPhone 3G S or have upgraded to the newest operating system.


Step 2: Type with both thumbs
Using your index finger to type is for beginners. Increase your efficiency by using both thumbs to tap the letters on your virtual keyboard. With some practice, thumb-typing will become automatic.


Step 3: Look at what you're typing
Instead of looking at the letters as you type, look at what you're typing -- it will increase your speed and accuracy. Once your thumbs know where the keys are, it won't take long to adjust.


Tip: If you touch a wrong key, slide your finger to the correct key. The letter isn't entered until you release your finger.


Step 4: Use shortcuts
Learn basic shortcuts. When starting a new sentence, simply double-tap the space bar to add a period and a space and switch your next letter to upper case. To turn caps lock on, enable Caps Lock in keyboard settings and double-tap the shift button; tap it again to turn it off.


Step 5: Learn the ABC-to-123 trick
Switching between the alphabetical and numerical keyboards takes time. Instead, press and hold down the Number key, and drag your finger to the number or punctuation mark you want to insert. When you let go, your key will be entered and you'll automatically go back to the letter keyboard.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 makes use of Geohot’s USB bootrom exploit used in limera1n for iOS 4.1.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 is available for both Mac and Windows users.


As Dev team had explained in the update yesterday there is good news if you are an iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G user and some bad news for users who own an iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G.


iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G users will be able to enjoy the benefit of an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w.


Unfortunately, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G users will have to manage with a tethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w. As Dev team had explained yesterday:


A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.


Comex is working hard to bring a untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for users with newer devices so we’ll let you know if we have any further updates.


Redsn0w will NOT hactivate or unlock your iPhone. So if you want to unlock your iPhone and currently have iOS 4.1 or lower running on your iPhone then please wait for Dev team to release PwnageTool for iOS 4.2.1 as it preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that you can use Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone. Dev team is also expected to release a new version of Ultrasn0w shortly for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. They have mentioned that the unlock for iPhone 4 users will need more effort and are not in a position to provide any further information currently.


Please remember that jailbreaking your iPhone may void its warranty so proceed with caution.

Apple iPhone iOS 4.2 Releasing: Prepare your iDevice for update (3G, 3GS, 4G, Unlock, Jailbreak, Auckland, Abby Technology Limited

Surely the iPad users were the most eager to get their hands on the iOS 4.2. This version will finally restore the balance between the pocket devices and the tablets. Besides the already mentioned features, the iPad is also getting everything that iOS has already brought on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

The iOS 4.2 brings AirPlay, AirPrint and a free version of Find My iDevice to all three Apple gadgets.
 
AirPlay allows direct streaming to Apple TV, while AirPrint is capable to print anything on your iDevice to the supported printers. Find My iPhone/iPod/iPad is now working without MobileMe subscription (which means free) on iOS 4.2 and won't work for iPhone 3G/3GS and earlier iPod Touches.

Let's hope the alarm bug is also fixed within the new firmware update.

Disadvantages To Jailbreak Your Apple iPhone 4, 3GS (Abby Technology Limited, http://go,to/abby)

 Jailbreaking an iPhone is a process that allows you to run any code on it which means that once you jailbreak your iPhone, you will be able to download applications that didn’t worked previously with your phone or application unavailable in Apple Store.  http://tiny.cc/2jailbreak

On a jailbreak iPhone you can install every application you want through Icy, Cydia, and you can also install illegal pirated applications. Jailbreaking an iPhone gives you many advantages, but also disadvantages and in the next lines we are going to talk about the disadvantages.

The first disadvantage is the fact that Apple has released an official SDK, so know you have the possibility to install 3^rd part applications on your device without “hacking” it. You can download the software which gives you the possibility to develop additional applications for your iPhone or to install additional tools. So, if the Software Development Kit is enough for you there is no point in jailbreaking your iPhone.

The second disadvantage is the risk of getting your precious device “bricked”. And as the work implies, your phone could become a brick which means that you won’t be able to do anything without it. If this thing happens is not the end of the world, because you can restore your firmware through iTunes and you get back the phone with the default settings.

Jailbreaking an iPhone slows it down which means that the performance won’t be the one you want and your iPhone won’t run as fast as you want, or as fast at it should. This is a big disadvantage, because the iPhone comes with state-of-the-art technology and great software and applications and it should run better than any other smartphone on the market.

If you jailbreak your iPhone you will lose storage on it, but this thing happens also when you install the Software Development Kit. So, if you are limited in storage capabilities, you should remove some of your applications and then install the SDK or jailbreak your phone. This is up to you, but we recommend to install first the SDK and see how it works for you and if you are not pleased with this software, then you can jailbreak your iPhone.

The security is not an issue when it comes to Apple and Mac, because there are not many viruses for Mac and the ones that are have a little effect on your information and don’t damage your computer. But situation changes when you jailbreak your iPhone, because you install application that comes from developers all over the world and no one knows what is behind those applications. You don’t know if you can trust them or it they can damage your phone, but one thing you should know is that the official SDK is more secure than those application.

Apple iOS: Gmail Gets Improved Web App on the iPhone (Apps, tips, tech, news, report, Auckalnd, "Abby Technology Limited")

You don't hear much about web apps these days, but there are some that look and function so well you might forget you're using Safari. Google has been constantly improving its Gmail web interface and they've recently revamped the mobile site again. Similar to the native Apple Mail app, the mobile version of Gmail's website is designed with the iPhone touch screen in mind.


You can swipe to archive a message, and now Google has improved the scroll speed to simulate the same quick flick of the finger to jump down in the mailbox. The toolbar has been anchored to the top of the screen, a welcome reversal of a recent change that had the toolbar floating over emails.


Now that the toolbar is fixed in place, several functions can be accessed from anywhere in the web app. If you are a user of the Gmail web app and the changes don't show up on your iPhone, make sure to clear the Safari cache and reload the page.


For developers, Google has offered to post information about the HTML and Javascript methods they used to make Gmail on the iPhone behave the way it does. The company periodically updates Gmail based on user feedback and the iPhone version is no different. So far the improved version of mobile Gmail is only available in English on the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple's iPad has its own web app version of Gmail optimized for the larger touch screen.


For those who use the Gmail web app often, the easiest way to access the page is to add a webclip to your home screen. This shortcut makes it possible to tap one icon to open Safari and load mobile Gmail immediately.

Can I stop iPhone iOS apps from running in the background? (user, tips, tool, trick, Auckland, Apple iPhone

Apps can be designed to run in the background on iOS 4. Some users have reported battery drain or other issues and they suspect some apps might be the culprit. Icons for recently opened apps appear in the fast app switching (or multitasking) dock.


Apps can't be prevented from running in the background, however you can quit them by following these steps:


1. To access the dock double-click the Home button.


2. Swipe left and right to see all of the icons for recently used apps. Some of these may be running in the background. Others are in a suspended state.


3. To quit any processes and remove the icon from the dock, hold down on any icon in the multitasking dock.


4. The icons will wiggle and a red circle appears on each icon. Tap the red circle to quit the app

Nokia goes for 'Touch and Type' with the X3 (Smartphone, tech, news, report, Auckland, "Nokia Repair"

21 August, 2010, Auckland--CONSUMER electronics companies are busy racing forward, embracing new technology and trying to develop gadgets with the latest and greatest features, but recently a couple of mobile phone makers have changed their tactics, introducing high-tech phones with, what many might consider, outdated features.
 
In a world where everyone is fighting to invent the next iPhone killer, companies such as Nokia and RIM have decided to "make the familiar new," opting to transform the older-styled 12-button keypad into a desirable smartphone feature.
 
Nokia announced it would introduce its first "Touch and Type" device while hinting at a new category of phones that embrace both the future and the past.

Nokia's first Touch and Type device, the X3, bridges the gap between smartphone and feature phone, combining smartphone features such as a touchscreen, and 3G and WiFi connectivity with "the most used mobile interface on the planet."
The device gently eases users who feel comfortable using the traditional mobile phone keypad into the world of smartphones.
 
"Our research tells us consumers who have invested years in becoming fast one-handed, one-thumb texters want to maintain their speedy edge for SMS, chat and instant messaging - yet enjoy the benefits of touch as well," said Mary McDowell, executive vice-president of mobile phones at Nokia.
 
It is a strategy that RIM also employed with their recently released Pearl 9100 3G handset.
Nokia's diminutive X3 phone comes with a 5-megapixel, 4x digital zoom camera for both video and stills, dedicated music and messaging keys, access to Nokia's Ovi Store, 3G and WiFi connectivity, e-mail, social networking, FM radio, and Bluetooth2.1.
