Year 2010: SmartPhone Users to Surpass 7 Million (tech, news, report, update, statistics, Auckland)

The figure of Smartphone users in Korea is projected to exceed 7 million this year, as indicated by industry informants. The Nexus S and Google: Everything There Is To Know (Abby Technology "Android Repair"), Auckland

Today's buzz is all about the Samsung Nexus S -- a still-under-wraps smartphone believed to be the successor to Google's Nexus One. According to various leaks, the Nexus S will be a "Google experience" device, meaning it'll run a stock version of Android without any of those baked-in manufacturer UIs. And, if the latest rumors prove to be true, the Samsung Nexus S will be rocking the as-of-yet-unannounced Android Gingerbread release.


While nothing official has been said about the Nexus S so far, the unofficial evidence is certainly stacking up fast. Here's a look at the latest leaks and intelligence surrounding the hotly anticipated Android device.


Samsung Nexus S: The Photos
Earlier today, tech blog Engadget posted a series of photos said to show the Samsung Nexus S out in the wild. The images depict a slim-looking black phone with rounded edges, a front-facing camera, and a "Google" logo imprinted on its back. Engadget says the pictures were taken about a month ago; the site provides no specifics, however, as to how they were obtained.


The images, it's worth noting, do match up with a mock-up created by the gang at Gizmodo a couple of weeks back (posted at the top of this page). The Giz crew says it created its mock-up based on an unnamed source's first-hand experience with the phone.


Samsung Nexus S: The Flickr Trail
The sharp-shooting gumshoes from Engadget also tracked down some pictures that appear to have been taken with Nexus S devices and then posted to Flickr and Picasa. According to Engadget, the photos all came from Google employees and are linked to smartphones with the model number GT-i9020. An FCC filing for that device includes a sketch that bears a noticeable resemblance to the phone seen in today's leaked images.


Samsung Nexus S: The Best Buy Clues
Best Buy has given us a couple of different clues about the Samsung Nexus S today. First, a banner appeared on the company's Web site advertising a "Pure Google" phone called -- you guessed it -- the Nexus S. Discovered by Android blog Phandroid, the banner stated that the Nexus S would be "available only at Best Buy this holiday season." It also featured a broken image with alternate text saying the phone would be offered on T-Mobile. Best Buy has since taken the ad down.


Another page on Best Buy's site, meanwhile, was later reported to be advertising a previously unseen Android device that matched the Nexus S profile.


There's more: Tech blog Android Police published what a tipster claims to be a snapshot of an internal Best Buy memo about the Samsung Nexus S. The memo references plans for the device to get its own dedicated display in Best Buy stores starting on November 14.


And finally, Phandroid published an alleged shot from Best Buy's computer system showing some of the specifics of the Nexus S phone.


Samsung Nexus S: Other Specs
So what about the other specs? Aside from what's already been mentioned, past leaks have predicted the Nexus S will have a 1.2GHz processor, a 5MP camera with HD video capture, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The site that published those claims -- Android blog AndroidandMe.com -- also says the phone will eventually be available on multiple carriers.


Samsung Nexus S: About That Name...
While much of the blogosphere has now taken to calling the device the Samsung Nexus S (try saying that name three times fast), bear in mind that we don't actually know what this device will ultimately be called. Earlier leaks referred to the phone as the Nexus Two. The crew from Android blog Android Central, meanwhile, believes the gadget will be known as the Samsung Elite.


Until anything official is announced, there's really no telling what the formal and final name will be.


Samsung Nexus S: Timeline and Possible Delays
Previous rumors had predicted the Samsung Nexus S (or whatever it might be called) would launch at Samsung's mobile event on November 8. That obviously didn't happen.


According to TechCrunch -- who we know would never publish unsubstantiated information -- the Samsung/Google Android device was originally set to be launched "imminently" but has now been delayed due to some sort of hardware issue.


Samsung Nexus S: The Gingerbread Story
The other wildcard in this equation is the presence of Gingerbread, Google's latest Android incarnation. The Nexus S, as mentioned above, is expected to ship with Gingerbread already installed. So where is this tasty-sounding software treat?


Android Gingerbread was widely expected to launch this week, with some rumors pointing to today -- November 11 -- as the date to watch. The day isn't over yet, but the hours are quickly ticking by, and so far there's no sign of any official Android news. Remember, too, that we heard similar rumors of Gingerbread's pending debut back in mid-October; as that instance demonstrated, these leaks don't always pan out.


Whether it lands today or not, all signs do point to Android Gingerbread being almost ready for consumption. Google set up its official Android Gingerbread statue a few weeks back. If past Android releases are any indication, that's likely a sign that some sort of announcement is on the way soon.


As for the Samsung Nexus S, it sure seems like something's a-cookin'. As for what exactly it is and when we'll be able to get our hands on it, only time will tell...stay tuned.

Yep, the rumors are true: The Samsung-built, "pure Google" Nexus S is real, and it's coming to T-Mobile or a Best Buy near you this month — complete with "Gingerbread," the latest version of the Android OS.
Google unveiled the long-rumored Nexus S -- the sequel to the Nexus One from way back in January -- early Monday, and as expected, the new handset is chock-full of snazzy 


Among them: a 5-megapixel camera in back (capable of 720p video recording), along with a VGA lens for video chat up front; a 4-inch, WVGA Super AMOLED display; 16GB of internal storage; and NFC (Near Field Communications) support for reading "smart" tags on nearby, "everyday" objects like movie posters, stickers and the like — or even, eventually, allow you to use your phone as a tap-enabled credit card. Under the hood hums a 1GHz Hummingbird processor.
 
No, the Nexus S's 4-inch, 800-by-480 screen isn't a Retina display, like the one on the iPhone 4. Instead Google is touting what it calls the Contour display: a slightly curved screen designed for the contour of your face. Interesting.
More important than the new hardware goodies is the fact that the Nexus S will be the first phone to ship with the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.
 
Expect such features as one-touch word selection for copy-and-paste (just tap a word and hold to select a single word and copy it to the clipboard, or tap to bring up a pair of arrows that you can drag around a selection of text); a new application manager that shows you how much power and memory your various apps are using; native Internet voice calling support; a redesigned on-screen QWERTY keypad for "faster, more intuitive typing" (so says Google); and a series of user interface tweaks for "simplicity and speed."
 
As with the HTC-made Nexus One, Google is calling the Nexus S a "pure Google" phone that was built by a third-party manufacturer — Samsung, in this case — under Google's strict supervision, to guarantee "tight integration of hardware and software" and essentially deliver an unfiltered Android experience, free from any bloatware or custom elements imposed by carriers.
Google promises that the handset will be available online and at Best Buy — either unlocked or with a T-Mobile contract — starting Dec. 16, or after Dec. 20 in the U.K. at Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy outlets. Unlike the Nexus One, however, Google will not be selling its new Nexus direct over the Web. As for pricing: $529 unlocked, or $199 with a two-year T-Mobile service plan, according to Best Buy's website (via Android Central).
 
TechCrunch managed to crank out an early review of the Nexus S, which it calls "sleeker" and "significantly faster" than the Nexus One, even if its "generic black plastic case" feels "somewhat cheap." TechCrunch also praises the phone's "good" battery life and solid camera quality.

Google Updates Gmail App For Android 2.2 (Froyo) With Priority Inbox & Improved Interface

Google have recently released an update to their Gmail application for Android, with the addition of new features for Android 2.2 (Froyo) users. The new update is now live in the Android Market, so anybody who owns a Froyo device can head over to the Market and grab the update for themselves. http://tiny.cc/androidmail  

There are a number of features included in this latest update that a lot of users will appreciate. One of the most noticeable things that have arrived in the update is the addition of priority inbox. This means that you will be able to see an ‘important’ label tagged on to some of the emails that you have marked as important, and view all of these in both a separate folder to your inbox, and get to them quickly if you are browsing your entire inbox.

  

Message replies have also been made more usable. When you are in an email, your message actions (the reply button, alongside other controls) will now stick to the top of the screen, so that you don’t have to scroll right to the top of the email to access these controls. This is a feature I have wanted to be present in Gmail for Android since I started using it, and it’s one that makes things a lot easier to use, especially when quickly replying to a message or starring it after I’ve read it. ]
 
Another feature that has made its way over from the desktop version of Gmail is the ability to view previous emails in a thread of messages. All you have to do to access the previous message is tap on the “show quoted text” button, so you can catch up with an old email conversation!

This is significant for more than one reason… Firstly, Gmail updates have previously come along with new versions of Android, meaning that the app wasn’t downloadable itself from the Android Market. This has now changed, with Gmail getting its own entry in the Market, separately from Android itself.
 
Secondly, the update is available only for Android 2.2 users, bringing us back to the issue of fragmentation on Google’s Android mobile platform. Although over half of the Android users in the world are now using 2.1 or later, there are still a lot of people stuck on older versions, and the older version of Gmail as a result.
Current phones with Android 2.2 in the UK include Google’s own Nexus One, as well as a selection of HTC’s phones such as the HTC Desire. In the USA, the Nexus One, HTC EVO, Motorola Droid 2 and Motorola Droid runs Google’s latest and greatest.

Apple iOS: Gmail Gets Improved Web App on the iPhone (Apps, tips, tech, news, report, Auckalnd, "Abby Technology Limited")

You don't hear much about web apps these days, but there are some that look and function so well you might forget you're using Safari. Google has been constantly improving its Gmail web interface and they've recently revamped the mobile site again. Similar to the native Apple Mail app, the mobile version of Gmail's website is designed with the iPhone touch screen in mind.


You can swipe to archive a message, and now Google has improved the scroll speed to simulate the same quick flick of the finger to jump down in the mailbox. The toolbar has been anchored to the top of the screen, a welcome reversal of a recent change that had the toolbar floating over emails.


Now that the toolbar is fixed in place, several functions can be accessed from anywhere in the web app. If you are a user of the Gmail web app and the changes don't show up on your iPhone, make sure to clear the Safari cache and reload the page.


For developers, Google has offered to post information about the HTML and Javascript methods they used to make Gmail on the iPhone behave the way it does. The company periodically updates Gmail based on user feedback and the iPhone version is no different. So far the improved version of mobile Gmail is only available in English on the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple's iPad has its own web app version of Gmail optimized for the larger touch screen.


For those who use the Gmail web app often, the easiest way to access the page is to add a webclip to your home screen. This shortcut makes it possible to tap one icon to open Safari and load mobile Gmail immediately.

There's nothing certain yet, but Samsung has a press event scheduled for the 8 November where a new Android smartphone will be presented.


There's already a brew of rumors that Google will present their next Nexus smartphone before the end of the year. Adding two and two together, it's only natural to assume that the new Nexus phone is what Samsung will present.


In fact, rumors go as far as saying that the new Google phone will be a restyled Samsung Galaxy S - hence the name, Nexus S.


Gizmodo reportedly has an unidentified source that confrms all these rumors and add that the handset has a front-facing secondary camera and a curved back. Other than that it's the Galaxy S alright.


The Nexus S should be running the latest and greatest of Android OS and we're guessing it's the yet to be unveiled Android 2.3 a.k.a. Gingerbread.


The Google Nexus S should show up on 8 November and start selling in time for the holidays but there is still no word on its price.

Jesus's face 'seen in Google Earth image (weird, strange, news, report, Auckland, "iPhone Services"

The 'face' of Jesus Christ has been 'seen' in an image picked up by Google Earth.
The resemblance was found by a 26-year-old man as he used the mapping website to look for holiday destinations.

Zach Evans, from Southampton, spotted the outline in satellite pictures of a field on farmland near Puspokladany in Hungary.


He told the Sun: "I'm not a religious person looking for images of Mary or Jesus in everything, but this is obvious."


A number of people have claimed to have seen the face of Jesus in recent years.


Last week, Alex Cotton, 38, saw Jesus's face in a drainpipe stain in Coventry.


Toby Elles, 22, from Salford, Manchester pictured an image burned into a frying pan after it caught fire.

The Samsung I5800 Galaxy 3 was announced a good one month ago and apparently it is almost ready to start shipping across Germany. The Android-running phone is said to hit the German market by the end of this very month.
The recently announced Samsung I5800 Galaxy 3 paid us a short visit a little while ago. The device is based on the Android platform (Android OS v2.1 a.k.a. Eclair) and packs a 3.2" capacitive touchscreen of WQVGA resolution.


Also on board there is a 3.2MP autofocus sharpshooter as well as support for Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth3.0 and HSDPA. The phone features a GPS receiver and a microSD card slot ready to accommodate cards with up to 32GB of inbuilt memory.
