WikiLeak on Apple iPhone 5 with 8MP Camera from Sony? (tech, news, report)

Even the iPhone 4G seems to be premiered early with iPhone OS 4 capabilities however the hardware rumors of 5MP camera and 64GB of storage are still unconfirmed yet as the device become official presumably this June. Then suddenly beside all this 4th generation early rumors, the iPhone 5G is much way ahead and up with rumor of taunting an 8MP camera supplied by Sony.

“Apple has picked Sony's 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar.”

Currently the iPhone’s camera is from OmniVision hint that the 5MP camera will come from them too. Knowing Sony’s phones mounted by their camera modules boast high quality captured images then I must say it’s not a bad choice. Along the way the 2011 maybe time for 4G networks so possibly we can have an iPhone 5G with 4G support.

In the end, it’s too early to tell for 2011 iteration of the iPhone, let’s just see what Apple has stored for us this summer, mainly the iPhone HD and iPhone OS 4.

Want to have an iPhone but for some reason you can't get your hands on one and instead have an iPod Touch? Then you're in luck, some random company based in Guangzhou, China has made a device that allows you to turn your iPod Touch into something that works like an iPhone. You've heard that right, the guys in China did it first.

What the device basically does is allowing the addition of a SIM card so that you can call with your iPod Touch. In order to do this, the device includes a speaker on top so that you can hear the calls, a SIM card slot, a baseband chip, a dock connector port and a "vibration motor" (possibly for silent mode or a similar functionality). Take note that it doesn't support 3G.

As with unofficial Apple products, you need to jailbreak your iPod Touch to gain access to the full features that the Apple Peel offers. The device will then install 2 applications, "Yosion" and "YsSMS".

As you can see, the user interface of Yosion has striking similarities with the phone application of the iPhone.

The SMS functionality is also similar to the iPhone.

You can then import your contacts from the SIM card to the on-board memory.

Overall, this is a nifty device to say the least. The question is, what will Apple do once they knew the existence of such device.
What's in it for you as a consumer?
(1) Save heaps from buying an expensive Apple iPhone 3G!
(2) Convert any unwanted or unused iPod (2nd or 3rd generation) to a real functioning, real Apple iPhone
(3) Avoid buy cheap knockouts or fake iPhone!
(4) Save tons of money making free calls via VIBER app on iPhone (it is free too)
(5) Send unlimited text messages to any phone number in the world via HeyWire free Apps

Downsides:
(1) Converted iPod can make use of 3G network only
(2) Does not support GPRS

What's Next?

Apple iPhone 4G Power User Tip: Way to type faster on iPhone (Abby Technology Limited)

Step 1: Use landscape mode
Whenever possible, type in landscape mode, which offers a larger keyboard and more space between keys. Landscape is available in all major applications if you have an iPhone 3G S or have upgraded to the newest operating system.

Step 2: Type with both thumbs
Using your index finger to type is for beginners. Increase your efficiency by using both thumbs to tap the letters on your virtual keyboard. With some practice, thumb-typing will become automatic.

Step 3: Look at what you're typing
Instead of looking at the letters as you type, look at what you're typing -- it will increase your speed and accuracy. Once your thumbs know where the keys are, it won't take long to adjust.

Tip: If you touch a wrong key, slide your finger to the correct key. The letter isn't entered until you release your finger.

Step 4: Use shortcuts
Learn basic shortcuts. When starting a new sentence, simply double-tap the space bar to add a period and a space and switch your next letter to upper case. To turn caps lock on, enable Caps Lock in keyboard settings and double-tap the shift button; tap it again to turn it off.

Step 5: Learn the ABC-to-123 trick
Switching between the alphabetical and numerical keyboards takes time. Instead, press and hold down the Number key, and drag your finger to the number or punctuation mark you want to insert. When you let go, your key will be entered and you'll automatically go back to the letter keyboard.

Apple Computer: 7 Inch iPad Live Picture Leaked? (sneak, preview, tech, report, news, Auckland, Abby Technology Limited)

26th December 2010 -- The Mini iPad or next-gen iPad or the iPad 2 have been talked about a lot over the past months, but nothing’s certain at this point, due to Apple’s secrecy. The Cupertino giant could be working on a smaller iPad (7 inch screen), or they could be simply upgrading the screen of the current tablet and adding it a camera or two. However, the following live pictures makes us think of the Mini iPad again…. http://tiny.cc/ipad7
This leaked shot shows a race car driver from Taiwan, Jimmy Lin holding the tablet, so it could be a knock-off of the slate made locally. Lin seems confident that the gadget in his hand is the next iPad, although this is kind of impossible at this point. I guess we’ll get confirmation at CES 2011, in case Apple decides to show its goodies (iPad 2, iPhone 5) in Vegas.
The device in the image sure looks genuine, but we’ve seem so many clones and copies that we don’t know what to believe any more…

iPad 2 Picture and Info Leaked: Dual Connectors, 7 Inch Retina Display, 128GB? (Abby Technology Limited, http://go.to/abby)

26th December, 2010--Well, this could be a scrapped iPad 1 project or maybe the iPad 2… We’re hoping that this image that’s just been leaked online shows the future Apple Tablet, in spite of the fact we don’t have a specs list for it yet. What we do know is that the device will use dual dock connectors, as shown in the leaked pictures.  http://tiny.cc/ipadmini
Mission Repair claims we’ll be seeing the new iPad in 4 months, while MacRumors mentions that patents for dual dock connectors have already been filed by the Cupertino giant. What’s the use of the side connector? Well, that’s an easy one – docking the slate in landscape mode, of course. Still, this might be a prototype of the first iPad rejected by Steve Jobs…
What do you think? Credits for the pics go out to Mission Repair!
IntoMobile has some rumors concerning the new iPad, so it appears that the iPad 2 will feature a Retina Display and 128GB of internal storage. Also, the device will pack a 7 inch display, supposedly and a camera, plus a micro or mini USB port. Launch date could be scheduled for the first quarter of 2011.
Interestingly enough, the source of this info leak, Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities mentioned that that the old iPad will be ditched in favor of the new one. How’s that for a strategy?

Why Some Countries Drive on the Right and Some Countries Drive on the Left?

Today We found out why some countries drive on the right and some countries drive on the left.  The origin of this varies based on the time period and country, but primarily throughout history people used the “keep-left” rule.  It has only been very recently that the world has predominately switched to the “keep-right” rule.
The first real archaeological evidence of a keep-left or keep-right type rule for a road, originates in the Roman Empire, which shouldn’t be surprising as they built a lot of massive, well trafficked roads spanning Europe and thus would have needed to establish certain rules governing how people were to interact on the roads.   So which side did the Romans use?  Archaeological evidence suggests it was common for the Romans to drive on the left side of the road.  This was first discovered in 1998 where a Roman quarry in Swindon, England had grooves in the road going away from the quarry on the left side that were significantly deeper than those on the right, due to the added weight of the stone.   It is not precisely known why they would have chosen this side, but it is probably similar to one of the main reasons this practice continued into the middle ages.
During the middle ages the roads weren’t always very safe for travelers; meeting people coming the other way on the road was something best done defensively.  Historians then believe the keep-left rule was adopted because, on a horse, if you were right handed and you met some unsavory company on the road, you could draw your weapon, typically attached to your left side, with your right hand and bring it to bear quickly against the person who is going the opposite way of you on your right; all the while, controlling the reigns with your left hand.  Then of course, if you happened to meet a friend on the road, you could more easily offer your right hand in greeting without needing to reach across your body when on horseback.  People on horseback then also typically ruled the road, so everybody else followed suit.
This keep-left rule was so common that, in 1300 AD, Pope Boniface VIII decreed that all pilgrims headed to Rome from wherever they were coming from should abide by the keep-left rule of the road along their journey.  This then held across most of the Western World until the late 1700s.
What ended up happening to force the switch in the 18th century were teamsters in the United States, who would drive large wagons with a team of horses, as the name implies.  These wagons tended to dominate the road and force everybody else to abide by the rule of the road they were using.  Very importantly, in many of those old, large American wagons, they did not include a seat on the wagon for the driver.  Rather, the driver would typically sit on the rear left most horse, when the driver was right handed.  This allowed them to easily drive a whole team of horses with a lash in their right hand.
This then forced the issue of having oncoming traffic on your left as the drivers would want to make sure any part of their team or wagon didn’t collide with oncoming traffic.  When sitting on the rear left most horse, this was much easier to do when using a keep-right rule of the road.  Just as important, if you wanted to pass a wagon in front of you, or at least see further down the road when you are sitting on the left side, it is much easier done if you are using the keep-right rule; this would give you much greater visibility of oncoming traffic when sitting on the left of your wagon.  Gradually, this system spread so that by the late 18th century, the first laws in the United States were passed, starting in 1792 in Pennsylvania, where the rule of the road was now officially a keep-right rule.  This quickly spread throughout the United States and Canada.
So how did this spread through Europe?  It started with France.  The reasons why the French switched to a keep-right rule instead of the traditional keep-left rule aren’t completely clear.  Some say it is because the French Revolutionists didn’t want anything to do with anything that had ever been Pope decreed.  Others say it was because they didn’t want to use the same rule of the road the English used.  Still others say it was entirely Napoleon’s doing.  The reasons why he may have done this, if that is the case, are even murkier ground.  Whatever the case, France switched to the keep-right system.  Napoleon then spread this system throughout the countries he conquered.  Even after he was defeated, most of the countries he had conquered chose to continue with the keep-right system.  The most important of these countries, as far as eventually further spreading the keep right system, was Germany.  Fast forward to the 20th century and, as Germany conquered countries in Europe, they forced their keep-right system onto those countries.

England never adopted this method primarily because massive wagons, as became common in the United States, didn’t work well on narrow streets which were common in London and other English cities.  England was also never conquered by Napoleon or later Germany.  Thus, they kept the classical keep-left rule of the road that had endured for hundreds of years before.   By 1756, this was actually made an official law in Britain.  As the British Empire expanded, this keep-left rule, as a law, spread throughout the world.  This hasn’t endured in most of the former British ruled countries, primarily thanks to Germany and the growing popularity of the keep-right system.  There are still a few though, probably the largest of which is India.
Bonus Factoids:
International regulations for preventing collisions at sea decree that all water traffic should keep to the right when two sea craft pass one another going opposite directions.  The reason for this was that historically the steering oar for ships was on the right hand side of the boat.  Thus, by passing each other port to port (keep-right), they would protect the steering oars from colliding as would have been possible had they adopted a keep-left rule.
In aircraft, the “rule of the road” is keep-right when passing oncoming air traffic.   Interestingly, in dual-control airplanes, the captain always sits on the left side of the plane as you might expect, but in helicopters, the captain sits on the right hand side.
Many early cars had the driver’s seat in the center of the car rather than on one side or the other.  Gradually, car manufactures began putting the seat on one side or the other.  Some chose to put it on the side closest to the curb so that people could more easily avoid scraping buildings, curbs, etc.  Other car manufactures would put it on the opposing traffic side to help reduce car to car collisions, which would tend to be more deadly.
Many early American motorized vehicles actually placed the steering wheel on the right hand side of the car, even though America used the keep-right rule.  This practiced finally was put to an end largely due to Henry Ford; he preferred the left side steering wheel.  Ford cars thus adopt the left hand side steering wheel.  Due to their popularity, this effectively squashed the right hand steering wheel cars in America.
According to research done in 1969 by J.J. Leeming, keep-left countries have a much lower collision rate than keep-right countries.  It is thought the reason behind this is that most people’s right eye is their dominate eye.  Thus, the right eye in keep-left traffic is the one closest to oncoming traffic and so should reduce collisions.   Another theory as to why this might be is that most people are right handed, so when driving a manual transmission car in a keep-left country, most people’s dominate hand is on the steering wheel; this could help in a person’s ability to maneuver accurately.
The people of Timor drive on the right in East Timor and the left in West Timor…  Ambidextrous drivers.
Most horse riders and cyclists will naturally mount the horse or bike from the left hand side.  In the cyclist’s case, this is why most bike chains and gears are on the right side of the bike so that the rider can walk along on the left side of the bike and not worry about getting pants or shoe laces caught in the gearing while walking beside the bike.

What Happens When You Stick Your Head Into a Particle Accelerator? (strange, news, science, tech, report, Auckland)

Today we found out what happens when you stick your head into a particle accelerator.
Exhibit A: Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski, a Russian scientist who has the distinction of being the only person to ever stick their head in a running particle accelerator.  Shockingly, he also managed to survive the ordeal and all things considered, come out without too much damage.
Bugorski was a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino.  Specifically he worked with the Soviet particle accelerator the synchrotron U-70.  On July 13, 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment.  As he was leaning over the piece of equipment he stuck his head through the part of the accelerator that the proton beam was running through.  Supposedly, he saw a flash that was “brighter than a thousand suns” at this point.  Interestingly, he did not feel any pain when this happened.
The beam itself measured 2000 gray as it entered Bugorski’s skull and about 3000 gray when it exited on the other side.  A “gray” is an SI unit of energy absorbed from ionizing radiation.  One gray is equal to the absorption of one joule of radiation energy by one kilogram of matter.  An example where this is commonly used is in X-rays.  For reference, absorption of over 5 grays at any time usually leads to death within 14 days.  However, no one before has ever experienced radiation in the form of a proton beam moving at about the speed of sound.

As you can see from the picture, the beam entered the back of Bugorski’s head and came out around his nose.  Shortly after this happened, Bugorski’s left half of his face swelled up beyond recognition.  He was taken to the hospital and studied as this was something that had never been seen before and so they closely monitored him thereafter, fully expecting him to die within a few days at most.

Although the skin on the part of his face and back of his head where the beam hit eventually peeled off over the next few days, Bugorski did not die as they thought he would.  The beam also burned through his skull and brain tissue along with the afore mentioned skin.  However, ultimately he came through it all surprisingly well.
Despite the beam going through his brain, his intellectual capacity remained the same as before.  The few negative health drawbacks he did experience were not life threatening either.  He lost the hearing in his left ear and experienced a constant unpleasant noise in that ear from then on.  The left half of his face slowly became paralyzed over the course of the next two years.  He also gets significantly more fatigued with mental work, though he did go on to get his PhD after this incident.  The remaining side effects were occasional absence seizures and later tonic-clonic seizures, though these didn’t show up right away.
Interestingly, looking at Bugorski now, you’d see the right half of his face looks like a normal wrinkled old man, but the left half of his face looks as if it was frozen in time 19 years ago.  Apparently Botox’s got nothing on a particle accelerator’s proton beam for stopping wrinkles.
Bonus Factoids:
During absence seizures, the person will often appear to be just staring off into space.  There is no typical jerking or twitching as is associated with many other types of seizures.  Absence seizure victims will often move from one location to another without purpose or thought behind it.  What is happening here is, under normal circumstances, thalamacortical oscillations maintain normal consciousness of an individual;  during absence seizures these are disrupted.
A synchrotron is a cyclic particle accelerator where a magnetic field and an electric field are carefully synchronized with a traveling particle beam.  The magnetic field turns the particles so they circulate; the electric field accelerates the particles.
Tonic-Clonic seizures are more typically what most people think of when we think of seizures.  During the “tonic” phase the person will lose consciousness and their muscles will suddenly tense.  This typically only lasts a few seconds.  During the “clonic” phase the muscles will start to contract and relax rapidly, causing the person to convulse sometimes severely.
Bugorski went on to get his PhD after this incident and worked as a scientist for many years.  In 1996 he applied for disabled status to receive his epilepsy medication free, but was turned down.  He also tried to make himself available to Western researchers but was unable to afford to leave Protvino.
Bugorski is married to Vera Nikolaevna and they together have one son named Peter.

Apple iPhone 4G: Send free worldwide texting (sms, BlackBerry, Google Android, Auckland, iPhone Repair)

Those who love to text are going to love this particular App. Hey Wire is designed to give the user a new number for SMS texting friends anywhere for free.  http://tiny.cc/HeyWire

That means you could be anywhere in the world and send off “lost in the desert somewhere” to your friends. This App also supports Facebook chat, and there are more services to be.
This App is free!
The HeyWire concept deserves an incredible honorable mention, free international texting and domestic. Who would not enjoy free international (and domestic texting)? Eliminating the need to pay the phone company ridiculous texting fees almost sounds impossible but that is exactly what HeyWire aims to offer.
The application gives you a personal phone number (USA Based) which allows you to send free text messages to your friends inside the USA and your friends outside the USA alike. HeyWire does not have any special requirements, it does not overload the application with advertisements and there are no necessary advertisements attached to each text message.
This is the exact reason why this application gets rated "Excellent" for concept. There is not much more you could ask for from a free texting service.
There are several other services on the iPhone which can be used for free texting, such as Google Voice. Another commonly used app is Textfree Unlimited. While these applications do offer free domestic texting on the iPhone, they do not offer service comparable to HeyWire.
The HeyWire service is quite simple to use. Signing up for an account is done upon first run of the application and you will be assigned a phone number. Phone numbers are limited to a very small area and, therefore, you will likely not be able to find a local number. This is not a big deal since the service is free.
Sending text messages to domestic numbers is just as you would expect. Simply enter the phone number or select the contact from your iPhone's address book and enter your message. Press send and your friend receives the text message as if it was sent to a regular phone. Your friends can simply text the number back and you will receive the message.
International text messaging is equally easy. Simply enter "+" and the country code, followed by the full phone number. Enter the message and press send. HeyWire supports most major cell phone carriers in most countries. Your friend will receive the text message from your USA based number. They will have to reply back to your USA number which may cost them some money, but it will always be free for you. If they happen to have a smart phone with Internet connectivity, they could consider using HeyWire as well to create completely free texting back to friends in the USA.
Messages are delivered instantly or nearly instantly. After extensive usage, no messages have been lost or failed to send, that includes several days worth the messages to international destinations such as El Salvador. Overall the service is excellent and the messages get to where they should in a timely fashion, just as if they were sent from a regular cell phone.
The HeyWire application is right on par with quality of service. The application is very easy to use, intuitive, responsive, and has many of the features which we want to see in a texting application.
There are a large number of customization options which range from setting signatures to changing the text
tone. Push notifications can be enabled or disabled, which is essential for a texting application. The HeyWire app reads your Address Book directly which is a nice feature, you won't have to worry about entering your contacts again into the app.
Messages are display similarly to the default texting application. Messages appear in a handy list, tapping one will bring up a chat style window with bubble text. Responding is just as easy as using the default iPhone texting application. When new messages come in, you are notified with a text tone. If the HeyWire app is not open, a push notification will appear with the contact name and the message. Clicking on the push notification will launch the app and bring up that conversation.
HeyWire is quite possible one of the best domestic texting apps for the iPhone, and without a doubt the best free international texting app. This app possesses many of the qualities of a paid application and the service offers outstanding quality.
There is not much left to be desired with the HeyWire application and service. Overall, it has come a long way since the initial first release and HeyWire has announced plans to add a Mac, PC and web version of the client as well. We hope to see this service continue to offer outstanding quality, as it offers a truly unique, quality product which is hard to find these days on any platform.
