WikiLeak on Apple iPhone 5 with 8MP Camera from Sony? (tech, news, report)

Even the iPhone 4G seems to be premiered early with iPhone OS 4 capabilities however the hardware rumors of 5MP camera and 64GB of storage are still unconfirmed yet as the device become official presumably this June. Then suddenly beside all this 4th generation early rumors, the iPhone 5G is much way ahead and up with rumor of taunting an 8MP camera supplied by Sony.


“Apple has picked Sony's 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar.”


Currently the iPhone’s camera is from OmniVision hint that the 5MP camera will come from them too. Knowing Sony’s phones mounted by their camera modules boast high quality captured images then I must say it’s not a bad choice. Along the way the 2011 maybe time for 4G networks so possibly we can have an iPhone 5G with 4G support. 


In the end, it’s too early to tell for 2011 iteration of the iPhone, let’s just see what Apple has stored for us this summer, mainly the iPhone HD and iPhone OS 4.

Year 2010: SmartPhone Users to Surpass 7 Million (tech, news, report, update, statistics, Auckland)

The figure of Smartphone users in Korea is projected to exceed 7 million this year, as indicated by industry informants. Apple Computer: 7 Inch iPad Live Picture Leaked? (sneak, preview, tech, report, news, Auckland, Abby Technology Limited)

26th December 2010 -- The Mini iPad or next-gen iPad or the iPad 2 have been talked about a lot over the past months, but nothing’s certain at this point, due to Apple’s secrecy. The Cupertino giant could be working on a smaller iPad (7 inch screen), or they could be simply upgrading the screen of the current tablet and adding it a camera or two. This leaked shot shows a race car driver from Taiwan, Jimmy Lin holding the tablet, so it could be a knock-off of the slate made locally. Lin seems confident that the gadget in his hand is the next iPad, although this is kind of impossible at this point. I guess we’ll get confirmation at CES 2011, in case Apple decides to show its goodies (iPad 2, iPhone 5) in Vegas.
The device in the image sure looks genuine, but we’ve seem so many clones and copies that we don’t know what to believe any more…

Toilet Paper was First Used by the Chinese, No Shit (history, fun, facts, strange, news, report, Auckland)

Today we found out that toilet paper was first used by the Chinese about 1300 years before it caught on with the rest of the world.  The first references of people using toilet paper dates back to the 6th century AD in the Chinese Imperial courts and amongst the other wealthy citizens of China.  This eventually spread throughout China and by the 14th century there was an annual manufacturing of around ten million packages of toilet paper in the Zhejiang province alone.
This however, did not catch on with the rest of the world for some time.  Indeed, a Muslim traveler to China in the 8th century noted “They (the Chinese) are not careful about cleanliness, and they do not wash themselves with water when they have done their necessities; but they only wipe themselves with paper.”  Outside of China it wouldn’t be until the late 1800′s when toilet paper would be introduced in America and England and it wasn’t until the 1900′s, around the same time the indoor toilet became common, that toilet paper would catch on with the masses.
So what did people use before toilet paper?  What was popular depended greatly on region, personal preference, and wealth.  Rich people often used hemp, lace, or wool;  poor people often would poop in rivers and clean off with water, rags, wood shavings (ouch!), leaves, hay, rocks, sand (wtf?), moss, sea weed, apple husks, seashells (Demolition Man much?), ferns, and pretty much whatever else was at hand and cheap/free.
The Ancient Romans favorite wiping item, including in public restrooms, was a sponge on a stick that would sit in salt water and be placed back in the salt water when done… waiting for the next person… *shudders* (kind of brings new meaning to the saying “the wrong end of the stick”)
Ancient Greeks were a little more sanitary using stones and pieces of clay.  America’s favorite wiping item tended to be corn cobs and later Sears and Roebucks, Farmers Almanac, and other catalogs.  The Farmers Almanac even came with a hole in it so it could be easily hung in bathrooms for just this purpose.
The 16th century French writer Francois Rabelais, in his work Gargantua and Pantagruel, notes that after pooping paper was useless, “Who his foul tail with paper wipes, shall at his ballocks leave some chips.”  He instead recommended that “the neck of a goose, that is well downed” worked best.
In India and other middle eastern countries, even today, the preferred method is to wipe using nothing but your left hand and water and then of course wash your hand well afterward and don’t handle any food or the like with your left hand; as such, people who are left handed tend to be forced to become right handed early on in those regions.
For seaman, the common thing was to use old frayed anchor cables (seriously, how their butt’s survived, we may never know).   The Inuit’s and other peoples living in frigid regions tended to go with clumps of snow to wipe with, which other than the coldness factor is actually one of the better options it seems compared to many other of the above methods.
Around 1857, Joseph Gayetty came up with the first commercially available toilet paper in the United States.  His paper “The greatest necessity of the age!  Gayetty’s medicated paper for the water-closet” was sold in packages of flat sheets that were moistened and soaked with aloe (about 130 years ahead of his time as it wasn’t until the 1990′s that toilet paper companies started doing this again).  Gayetty’s toilet paper sold for about 50 cents a pack, with 500 sheets per pack.  This wasn’t terribly popular, presumably because up to this point most people got their wiping materials for free from whatever was at hand.
Around 1867, brothers Edward, Clarence, and Thomas Scott, who sold products from a push cart, started making and selling toilet paper as well.  They did a bit better than Gayetty, presumably because their original toilet paper wasn’t coated with aloe and moistened, thus was cheaper; rather it was more just rolls of somewhat soft paper (sometimes with splinters).  They also had the somewhat innovative idea of putting the names of the companies that were buying the toilet paper on the paper.  This wasn’t initially done as a business move to help sell the paper, rather was because they were uncomfortable with having their family name literally soiled; nevertheless putting the company names, such as with the Waldorf Hotel, on the toilet paper was a huge hit with the companies they were selling to and helped them stay in business where Gayetty had failed.
As the indoor flushable toilet started to become popular, so did toilet paper; not surprising considering there was nothing really to grab in an indoor bathroom to wipe with, unlike outdoors where nature is at your disposal.  The age old Farmers Almanac and similar such catalogs also were not well suited for this purpose as in indoor plumbing it tended to clog up the pipes.
A few notable toilet paper innovations that came along were:
Rolled and perforated toilet paper made by the Albany Perforating Wrapping Paper Company in 1877 and shortly after the Scott Paper company in 1879.
In 1935 Northern Tissue boasted a “splinter free” toilet tissue, which would seem to imply that it was somewhat common for toilet tissue to have the occasional splinter before that due to poor manufacturing techniques of the day.
In 1942, St. Andrew’s paper mill in Great Britain introduced two-ply toilet paper.
In the 1990′s several toilet paper manufacturers began offering toilet paper treated with aloe, which they called a “great innovation”… as Joseph Gayetty rolls over in his grave.

Johnny Carson once caused a near month long toilet paper shortage in the U.S. in December of 1973.  In his show, he said, “You know what’s disappearing from the supermarket shelves?  Toilet paper… There’s an acute shortage of toilet paper in the United States.”  Americans promptly went out and bought up every piece of toilet paper they could find.  Supermarkets tried to ration it, but to no avail.  By noon the next day, pretty much all the nation’s supermarkets were sold out.  After several days of toilet paper shortages due to this hysteria, Carson went on the air to try to explain it had been a joke and apologized.  But because the shelves were almost always empty of toilet paper at this time, whenever some would come in, people would buy it all and hoard it.  This toilet paper shortage lasted a full three weeks.

What Happens When You Stick Your Head Into a Particle Accelerator? (strange, news, science, tech, report, Auckland)

Today we found out what happens when you stick your head into a particle accelerator.
Exhibit A: Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski, a Russian scientist who has the distinction of being the only person to ever stick their head in a running particle accelerator.  Shockingly, he also managed to survive the ordeal and all things considered, come out without too much damage.
Bugorski was a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino.  Specifically he worked with the Soviet particle accelerator the synchrotron U-70.  On July 13, 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment.  As he was leaning over the piece of equipment he stuck his head through the part of the accelerator that the proton beam was running through.  Supposedly, he saw a flash that was “brighter than a thousand suns” at this point.  Interestingly, he did not feel any pain when this happened.
The beam itself measured 2000 gray as it entered Bugorski’s skull and about 3000 gray when it exited on the other side.  A “gray” is an SI unit of energy absorbed from ionizing radiation.  One gray is equal to the absorption of one joule of radiation energy by one kilogram of matter.  An example where this is commonly used is in X-rays.  For reference, absorption of over 5 grays at any time usually leads to death within 14 days.  However, no one before has ever experienced radiation in the form of a proton beam moving at about the speed of sound.


As you can see from the picture, the beam entered the back of Bugorski’s head and came out around his nose.  Shortly after this happened, Bugorski’s left half of his face swelled up beyond recognition.  He was taken to the hospital and studied as this was something that had never been seen before and so they closely monitored him thereafter, fully expecting him to die within a few days at most.


Although the skin on the part of his face and back of his head where the beam hit eventually peeled off over the next few days, Bugorski did not die as they thought he would.  The beam also burned through his skull and brain tissue along with the afore mentioned skin.  However, ultimately he came through it all surprisingly well.
Despite the beam going through his brain, his intellectual capacity remained the same as before.  The few negative health drawbacks he did experience were not life threatening either.  He lost the hearing in his left ear and experienced a constant unpleasant noise in that ear from then on.  The left half of his face slowly became paralyzed over the course of the next two years.  He also gets significantly more fatigued with mental work, though he did go on to get his PhD after this incident.  The remaining side effects were occasional absence seizures and later tonic-clonic seizures, though these didn’t show up right away.
Interestingly, looking at Bugorski now, you’d see the right half of his face looks like a normal wrinkled old man, but the left half of his face looks as if it was frozen in time 19 years ago.  Apparently Botox’s got nothing on a particle accelerator’s proton beam for stopping wrinkles. 
Bonus Factoids:
During absence seizures, the person will often appear to be just staring off into space.  There is no typical jerking or twitching as is associated with many other types of seizures.  Absence seizure victims will often move from one location to another without purpose or thought behind it.  What is happening here is, under normal circumstances, thalamacortical oscillations maintain normal consciousness of an individual;  during absence seizures these are disrupted.
A synchrotron is a cyclic particle accelerator where a magnetic field and an electric field are carefully synchronized with a traveling particle beam.  The magnetic field turns the particles so they circulate; the electric field accelerates the particles.
Tonic-Clonic seizures are more typically what most people think of when we think of seizures.  During the “tonic” phase the person will lose consciousness and their muscles will suddenly tense.  This typically only lasts a few seconds.  During the “clonic” phase the muscles will start to contract and relax rapidly, causing the person to convulse sometimes severely.
Bugorski went on to get his PhD after this incident and worked as a scientist for many years.  In 1996 he applied for disabled status to receive his epilepsy medication free, but was turned down.  He also tried to make himself available to Western researchers but was unable to afford to leave Protvino.

Aliens Have Size 440 Shoes: New Zealand Releases UFO Files (UFO, sighting, report, Auckland, NZ)

The New Zealand military has just released hundreds of documents that detail various UFO sightings and alien encounters. The report dates from 1954 to 2009, and is about 2000 pages long. The report details various oddities, including one about an alien with size 440 shoes.


The various reports were made by members of the public, military personnel, and commercial pilots. The majority of the UFO sightings involve strange, unexplained lights in the sky. Some have hand drawn pictures, photographs, or even videos.


Here are a few examples from the report.


1.) In 1995, a man claims that he met a giant alien with size 440 shoes. The alien explained to the man what happens to humans when they die. The alien said that humans ascend as hydrogen atoms. ”You will remain in hydrogen form for 150 years. Then it will change to sodium,” the alien said. The alien did not comment on where he bought his shoes.


2.) An early example says that a UFO enthusiast witnessed a “strange bowl-shaped object” fall from the sky. But before he could get a closer look at it, the objected ”bounced high and landed on a government survey vessel.”


3.) Another man reproduced a sample of alien writing that he had seen.


4.) In 1998, a woman says that she experienced the sensation of rain on her arms even though weather conditions were clear and calm. The woman also reported seeing a large oval object with a bright reddish light when she experienced the “alien rain.”


5.) The most high profile case, and the most probable for alien contact, involved a sighting in 1978 above the town of Kaikoura. The strange lights were captured by a TV crew, and were also reported on air traffic controller’s radar screens, even though no aircrafts were supposed to be in the area.

1 “Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so,” joked Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Scientists aren’t laughing, though. Some speculative new physics theories suggest that time emerges from a more fundamental—and timeless—reality.
2 Try explaining that when you get to work late. The average U.S. city commuter loses 38 hours a year to traffic delays.
3 Wonder why you have to set your clock ahead in March? Daylight Saving Time began as a joke by Benjamin Franklin, who proposed waking people earlier on bright summer mornings so they might work more during the day and thus save candles. It was introduced in the U.K. in 1917 and then spread.
4 Green days. The Department of Energy estimates that electricity demand drops by 0.5 percent during Daylight Saving Time, saving the equivalent of nearly 3 million barrels of oil.

Today's buzz is all about the Samsung Nexus S -- a still-under-wraps smartphone believed to be the successor to Google's Nexus One. According to various leaks, the Nexus S will be a "Google experience" device, meaning it'll run a stock version of Android without any of those baked-in manufacturer UIs. And, if the latest rumors prove to be true, the Samsung Nexus S will be rocking the as-of-yet-unannounced Android Gingerbread release.


While nothing official has been said about the Nexus S so far, the unofficial evidence is certainly stacking up fast. Here's a look at the latest leaks and intelligence surrounding the hotly anticipated Android device.


Samsung Nexus S: The Photos
Earlier today, tech blog Engadget posted a series of photos said to show the Samsung Nexus S out in the wild. The images depict a slim-looking black phone with rounded edges, a front-facing camera, and a "Google" logo imprinted on its back. Engadget says the pictures were taken about a month ago; the site provides no specifics, however, as to how they were obtained.


The images, it's worth noting, do match up with a mock-up created by the gang at Gizmodo a couple of weeks back (posted at the top of this page). The Giz crew says it created its mock-up based on an unnamed source's first-hand experience with the phone.


Samsung Nexus S: The Flickr Trail
The sharp-shooting gumshoes from Engadget also tracked down some pictures that appear to have been taken with Nexus S devices and then posted to Flickr and Picasa. According to Engadget, the photos all came from Google employees and are linked to smartphones with the model number GT-i9020. An FCC filing for that device includes a sketch that bears a noticeable resemblance to the phone seen in today's leaked images.


Samsung Nexus S: The Best Buy Clues
Best Buy has given us a couple of different clues about the Samsung Nexus S today. First, a banner appeared on the company's Web site advertising a "Pure Google" phone called -- you guessed it -- the Nexus S. Discovered by Android blog Phandroid, the banner stated that the Nexus S would be "available only at Best Buy this holiday season." It also featured a broken image with alternate text saying the phone would be offered on T-Mobile. Best Buy has since taken the ad down.


Another page on Best Buy's site, meanwhile, was later reported to be advertising a previously unseen Android device that matched the Nexus S profile.


There's more: Tech blog Android Police published what a tipster claims to be a snapshot of an internal Best Buy memo about the Samsung Nexus S. The memo references plans for the device to get its own dedicated display in Best Buy stores starting on November 14.


And finally, Phandroid published an alleged shot from Best Buy's computer system showing some of the specifics of the Nexus S phone.


Samsung Nexus S: Other Specs
So what about the other specs? Aside from what's already been mentioned, past leaks have predicted the Nexus S will have a 1.2GHz processor, a 5MP camera with HD video capture, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The site that published those claims -- Android blog AndroidandMe.com -- also says the phone will eventually be available on multiple carriers.


Samsung Nexus S: About That Name...
While much of the blogosphere has now taken to calling the device the Samsung Nexus S (try saying that name three times fast), bear in mind that we don't actually know what this device will ultimately be called. Earlier leaks referred to the phone as the Nexus Two. The crew from Android blog Android Central, meanwhile, believes the gadget will be known as the Samsung Elite.


Until anything official is announced, there's really no telling what the formal and final name will be.


Samsung Nexus S: Timeline and Possible Delays
Previous rumors had predicted the Samsung Nexus S (or whatever it might be called) would launch at Samsung's mobile event on November 8. That obviously didn't happen.


According to TechCrunch -- who we know would never publish unsubstantiated information -- the Samsung/Google Android device was originally set to be launched "imminently" but has now been delayed due to some sort of hardware issue.


Samsung Nexus S: The Gingerbread Story
The other wildcard in this equation is the presence of Gingerbread, Google's latest Android incarnation. The Nexus S, as mentioned above, is expected to ship with Gingerbread already installed. So where is this tasty-sounding software treat?


Android Gingerbread was widely expected to launch this week, with some rumors pointing to today -- November 11 -- as the date to watch. The day isn't over yet, but the hours are quickly ticking by, and so far there's no sign of any official Android news. Remember, too, that we heard similar rumors of Gingerbread's pending debut back in mid-October; as that instance demonstrated, these leaks don't always pan out.


Whether it lands today or not, all signs do point to Android Gingerbread being almost ready for consumption. Google set up its official Android Gingerbread statue a few weeks back. If past Android releases are any indication, that's likely a sign that some sort of announcement is on the way soon.


As for the Samsung Nexus S, it sure seems like something's a-cookin'. As for what exactly it is and when we'll be able to get our hands on it, only time will tell...stay tuned.

Yep, the rumors are true: The Samsung-built, "pure Google" Nexus S is real, and it's coming to T-Mobile or a Best Buy near you this month — complete with "Gingerbread," the latest version of the Android OS.
Google unveiled the long-rumored Nexus S -- the sequel to the Nexus One from way back in January -- early Monday, and as expected, the new handset is chock-full of snazzy 


Among them: a 5-megapixel camera in back (capable of 720p video recording), along with a VGA lens for video chat up front; a 4-inch, WVGA Super AMOLED display; 16GB of internal storage; and NFC (Near Field Communications) support for reading "smart" tags on nearby, "everyday" objects like movie posters, stickers and the like — or even, eventually, allow you to use your phone as a tap-enabled credit card. Under the hood hums a 1GHz Hummingbird processor.
 
No, the Nexus S's 4-inch, 800-by-480 screen isn't a Retina display, like the one on the iPhone 4. Instead Google is touting what it calls the Contour display: a slightly curved screen designed for the contour of your face. Interesting.
More important than the new hardware goodies is the fact that the Nexus S will be the first phone to ship with the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.
 
Expect such features as one-touch word selection for copy-and-paste (just tap a word and hold to select a single word and copy it to the clipboard, or tap to bring up a pair of arrows that you can drag around a selection of text); a new application manager that shows you how much power and memory your various apps are using; native Internet voice calling support; a redesigned on-screen QWERTY keypad for "faster, more intuitive typing" (so says Google); and a series of user interface tweaks for "simplicity and speed."
 
As with the HTC-made Nexus One, Google is calling the Nexus S a "pure Google" phone that was built by a third-party manufacturer — Samsung, in this case — under Google's strict supervision, to guarantee "tight integration of hardware and software" and essentially deliver an unfiltered Android experience, free from any bloatware or custom elements imposed by carriers.
Google promises that the handset will be available online and at Best Buy — either unlocked or with a T-Mobile contract — starting Dec. 16, or after Dec. 20 in the U.K. at Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy outlets. Unlike the Nexus One, however, Google will not be selling its new Nexus direct over the Web. As for pricing: $529 unlocked, or $199 with a two-year T-Mobile service plan, according to Best Buy's website (via Android Central).
 
TechCrunch managed to crank out an early review of the Nexus S, which it calls "sleeker" and "significantly faster" than the Nexus One, even if its "generic black plastic case" feels "somewhat cheap." TechCrunch also praises the phone's "good" battery life and solid camera quality.

WikiLeaks struck by DDoS Attack moments before first Leak

WikiLeaks was warned by the State Department that releasing the millions of classified documents containing sensitive materials could put lives at risk, more importantly embarrass the U.S.
Suspiciously, only moments before WikiLeaks was set to release the first batch of information, the site was hit by a denial of service attack ( DDoS).

According to a tweet from the website’s official Twitter account, WikiLeaks is experiencing a DDoS attack. The reported attackers are not yet known. We are currently attempting to verify that WikiLeaks is indeed under attack.
Unfortunately for WikiLeaks, it turns out that the first leak has already been leaked in Germany, thanks to a leaked embargo copy of Der Spiegel.

According to Gawker however, the lead isn’t that damaging, a Twitter user bought a copy of the German news magazine outlining the leak after it was placed on newstands too early.
From the German point of view there are no earth-shattering revelations, just a lot of candid talk about world leaders.


According to Der Spiegel:
Angela Merkel is praised as “teflon,” though she “avoids risk and is rarely creative,” and German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle is repeatedly bashed. There is talk of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s “wild parties,”  and Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is likened to Hitler. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is called an “emperor with no clothes.” The cables also show Obama has “no emotional relationship with Europe,” focusing instead on Asian countries If WikiLeaks can get their site back online, the full barrage of transcripts will be available this afternoon at about 4:30 pm EST with the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Speigel. But, as you can see Der Speigel pre-maturely released some of the leaks.
