Google unveils Nexus S with Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ (Abby Technology Limited, Auckland) 0212640000

(By Ben Patterson – Mon Dec 6, 12:10 pm ET)  http://tiny.cc/nexuss
Yep, the rumors are true: The Samsung-built, "pure Google" Nexus S is real, and it's coming to T-Mobile or a Best Buy near you this month — complete with "Gingerbread," the latest version of the Android OS.
Google unveiled the long-rumored Nexus S -- the sequel to the Nexus One from way back in January -- early Monday, and as expected, the new handset is chock-full of snazzy

Among them: a 5-megapixel camera in back (capable of 720p video recording), along with a VGA lens for video chat up front; a 4-inch, WVGA Super AMOLED display; 16GB of internal storage; and NFC (Near Field Communications) support for reading "smart" tags on nearby, "everyday" objects like movie posters, stickers and the like — or even, eventually, allow you to use your phone as a tap-enabled credit card. Under the hood hums a 1GHz Hummingbird processor.

No, the Nexus S's 4-inch, 800-by-480 screen isn't a Retina display, like the one on the iPhone 4. Instead Google is touting what it calls the Contour display: a slightly curved screen designed for the contour of your face. Interesting.
More important than the new hardware goodies is the fact that the Nexus S will be the first phone to ship with the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.

Expect such features as one-touch word selection for copy-and-paste (just tap a word and hold to select a single word and copy it to the clipboard, or tap to bring up a pair of arrows that you can drag around a selection of text); a new application manager that shows you how much power and memory your various apps are using; native Internet voice calling support; a redesigned on-screen QWERTY keypad for "faster, more intuitive typing" (so says Google); and a series of user interface tweaks for "simplicity and speed."

As with the HTC-made Nexus One, Google is calling the Nexus S a "pure Google" phone that was built by a third-party manufacturer — Samsung, in this case — under Google's strict supervision, to guarantee "tight integration of hardware and software" and essentially deliver an unfiltered Android experience, free from any bloatware or custom elements imposed by carriers.
Google promises that the handset will be available online and at Best Buy — either unlocked or with a T-Mobile contract — starting Dec. 16, or after Dec. 20 in the U.K. at Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy outlets. Unlike the Nexus One, however, Google will not be selling its new Nexus direct over the Web. As for pricing: $529 unlocked, or $199 with a two-year T-Mobile service plan, according to Best Buy's website (via Android Central).

TechCrunch managed to crank out an early review of the Nexus S, which it calls "sleeker" and "significantly faster" than the Nexus One, even if its "generic black plastic case" feels "somewhat cheap." TechCrunch also praises the phone's "good" battery life and solid camera quality.

Skyfire app will bring flash video playback to Apple iOS devices ("iPhone Repair", Auckand, http://go.to/abby)

Finally the Skyfire app that lends flash video playback functionality has been approved by Apple for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.  http://tiny.cc/SkyFire

The wait is not going to be prolonged, as the app will hit iTunes store yesterday and it will be a welcome addition to your Apple device as most of the videos in the cloud are flash-based. Skyfire application transcodes the videos to its servers and then converts them to HTML5 format so that you can enjoy non-stop video playback on Apple devices without a hitch.
The app will be available for download from the Apps Store for $2.99 and I think this application will be a big hit with iPhone and iPad users.  This post is sponsored by Abby Technology Limited - Blackberry, Android Phone Repair and Apple iPhone Unlock Professional.  Via: Skyfire/Apple Insider

wedish Motorist Facing World’s Biggest Speeding Fine Of $1Million (record, road, car, Auckland)

A Swedish man has been handed what is believed to be the world’s largest speeding fine, which is expected to cost him £650,000.
 http://tiny.cc/speeding

The 37-year-old man was driving at two and a half times the speed limit in his £140,000 Mercedes when he was pulled over by traffic police in Switzerland. And police said he was travelling so fast it took him some distance to stop.

The motorist was travelling faster than any other person to be caught speeding in the country, according to prosecutors.

In Switzerland, speeding fines are calculated using a formula that takes into consideration on the income of the motorist and the severity of the speed.

The man is now facing the highest possible penalty of 300 days of fines at £2,166 a day – a total of £650,000. “We have no record of anyone being caught travelling faster in the country,” said a police spokesman.

He escaped being zapped by numerous radars en-route simply because he was going too fast and they were incapable of clocking speeds beyond 200kph (125mph). It was a new generation of radar machines that finally caught him travelling at close to 300kph.
However, a new generation of radar machines finally clocked him travelling at close to 186mph on the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne on Friday.

Giving police a watertight explanation as to why he was travelling so fast, he said: “I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty.”

The police arrested the man, who has not been named, shortly afterward and released him after questioning. Benoît Dumas, a police officer in the region where the six-litre Mercedes SLS was stopped, said: “He needed over half a kilometre of road to come to a halt.”
It’s not the first time someone has had to pay such a hefty fine in Europe for speeding. And even lower speeds can generate big fines.

In January, a Swiss court slapped a $290,000 speeding ticket on a millionaire Ferrari driver who drove 60 mph (nearly twice the 30 mph limit) through a small village.
The head of Finnish communications giant Nokia was ordered to may a $103,000 fine for his speeding ticket in 2002. Officers pulled over Anssi Vanjoki on his cherry red Harley Davidson in Helsinki after he was clocked driving 47 mph in a 31-mph zone.
In Finland, traffic fines are also proportionate to an offender’s crime and income level. [via Daily Telegraph (UK) and MSNBC] Technology blogs Technology Blogs Technology Blogs Technology blogs

Caught: Apple iPhone thief -- minutes later after GPS tracked him down! (Abby Technology, "iPhone Repair", Auckland, auto, asap)

A thief, Horatio Toure, who stole an Apple iPhone from its owner’s hands was arrested by American police within minutes after being tracked by global positioning system (GPS) software.

The 31 year-old snatched the highly-sought after phone from the hands of a software company employee who was testing a new application in San Francisco earlier this week.
But the hapless thief was arrested by police just nine minutes later after the iPhone tracked his every move.

The phone was being used to test a new real-time tracking application, which had been produced by Covia Labs, a software company based in the San Francisco Bay suburb of Mountain View.
David Kahn, the company’s chief executive, said he sent the 23 year-old female intern, who has not been named, out to walk around the block during a demonstration for a client.
The software is designed to help police and the military track officers in the field.

But as Mr Kahn and his client David Fonkalsrud watched a live map of the phone's location on his computer they became puzzled by how quickly the image was moving down the street.
Police said Toure had escaped by bicycle.

“We kind of noticed while that was happening, boy, she was really starting to move pretty fast and she wasn't heading back toward the place," Mr Kahn told the San Jose Mercury News.
"Moments later she comes bursting into the office and said she'd just been mugged."
Mr Kahn said he used the software to track the thief's movements while the intern called police.
"It was pretty exciting to realise what was going on and wondering if he had noticed," Mr Kahn said.
“I actually had an adrenaline rush. Obviously if he had turned off the phone that would have been it."

Mr Fonkalsrud added: “It probably sounds almost unreal. It's almost as if it's a bank robber picking a day to rob a bank when there are five police officers in the branch."
The pair denied the incident was a publicity stunt.

Albie Esparza, a San Francisco Police spokeswoman, said: “That's pretty effective software, I would say.
"Criminals are opportunistic. … But I'm sure even criminals won't take a chance if they know that there's a tracking device."
Toure was later charged with theft and possession of stolen property after the intern identified him as the thief. He will appear in court at a later date.
An Apple spokesman was unavailable for comment.
