How to Manually Add Songs to Your Apple iPhone 3GS through iTunes (guide, tips, info, tools, iOS, help, info, "Abby Technology", Auckland")

iTunes, by default, will sync all of your media with your iPhone. You can also manually pick and choose which files to sync with your iPhone.  Disclaimers: This post is meant for academical research and reading pleasures only. Author of this blog is not liable for any damages done to your iPhone if you claimed that the content of this post lead you to damage your own phone; so, do please be warned! http://tiny.cc/2add
How Automatic Sycning Works
Many iPhone owners may notice that when they plug in their iPhone to their computers, that it syncs to your library. What this means is it adds all of the media such as photos, music, videos and so on that you have in your entire iTunes library. This would be a great feature if your iPhone had an unlimited amount of space.
Problems with the Automatic Sync Feature
All of the benefits of having your iPhone automatically sync to your computer, as you all know, are not always a benefit as the iPhone is limited to either 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB . Thus, users who have very large libraries of movies, music and pictures may exceed those limits.
So what can you do if you only want a couple songs from an album instead of the whole thing? Well that's where selecting the manual option to manage your iPhone feature comes into play.
Here we'll go through the steps you can take to disable the automatic sync option on your iPhone/iTunes so that you can manually manage which songs are added to your iPhone to conserve precious hard drive space.
How to Disable the Automatic Sync Option
Your first step to setting this up is to plug in you iPhone to your computer. When this is done you will see that it will show up as a device in iTunes. When you see it show up click on the name of your iPhone, for example, mine is called Chris's iPhone. When you click on it it will show your overall menu for your iPhone, things like the info, ringtones, music, photos, but the very first tab should say summary. This is where you will select the option manually manage music and video.
You will see three boxes in the lower half of the menu, it's technically located under the "options.
The default box checked is normally the "automatically sync when this iPhone is connected. Deselect that box and then check the manually manage music and videos. This will ask you if you want to erase and sync, approve that.
Syncing on Your Own
Once the manually manage option is checked and it has synced up you are ready to go. Keep in mind that this is the only time the iPhone will sync, once it's done you will be able to manually pick and choose your songs and videos you want on your iPhone.

How to Manually Add Songs
So the hard part is done. You should now have the manually manage music and video box checked. From here you can click on the music option on the left side under the Library section. You then will just click on a song and simply drag it to your iPhone. You should see a a little green plus icon pop up as the song hovers over the iPhone. When you release the mouse, it will be added to the iPhone. That's all you got to do.
Now if you would like to remove an item from your iPhone it's just as simple. Make sure your iPhone is plugged in and click on the music option that is located under your iPhone. Go and select the song you want to remove and just click the delete button on your keyboard. That's all that needs to be done. You will see the file disappear and it is no longer on your iPhone.
Now you are only able to sync your iPhone to one iTunes library, so every time you plug an iPhone into a different computer then you will have to erase and sync your iPhone so it will only remain to not sync if you keep using the same iTunes library.
This feature makes it a little easier to maintain the space on your iPhone for what you want so take advantage of it and enjoy. Check out a guide about deleting iPhone apps from your iPhone to save even more space.

Tethering Guide for Auckland Apple iPhone 4 or iOS4 (tech, tips, guide, help, info, user, tools, Abby Technology Limited, NZ)

Tether your iPhone 4 or iPhone running iOS4 via Wi-Fi. Share the iPhone 4 internet connection with your laptop or other Wi-Fi enabled devices, even your PC. Enjoy streaming media, web pages, email and everything else about the internet using your iPhone 4 or iOS4 enabled device and Wi-Fi tethering.  http://tiny.cc/2tether
iOS4 Tethering: Options
With the release of the iOS4 and the iPhone 4 many users are anxious to enable Wi-Fi tethering. Wi-Fi tethering will enable users to share their iPhone internet connection with other devices wirelessly. iPhone 4 and iOS4 Wi-Fi tethering is quite easy to use and it is built into the iOS4 operating system.
Many cellular networks such as AT&T require users to purchase a special tethering plan to use tethering with their iPhone. Tethering plans are often over priced and do not offer large amounts of data transfer. Users with jailbroken iPhone's can enjoy the luxury of Wi-Fi tethering using their cellular data network without purchasing a tethering package. Accomplishing unofficial tethering will require the use of special software that can be downloaded on a jailbroken iPhone.
Users of non-jailbroken iPhones who simply wish to utilize tethering through a tethering plan on their cellular network can do so quite easily. This guide will cover the official Wi-Fi tethering method for the iPhone 4 and iOS4 and then afterwards it will explain how to tether with a jailbroken iPhone 4 or iOS4.
iOS4: Official Tethering
Tethering the iPhone 4 and iOS4 the official way will often require you to purchase a tethering package from your wireless provider. The procedure for purchasing a tethering package will vary based on provider. Not all users will need to purchase a tethering package. You can test to see if a tethering package is required by activating internet tethering. To activate Wi-Fi tethering for iOS4 follow these steps:
Open settings. Tap the grey settings icon on the home screen of your iPhone.
Choose network. Tap on "General". Tap on "Network" to open the network settings section.
Enable tethering. Enable Wi-Fi tethering in iOS4 by tapping "Set up Internet Tethering". Choose Wi-Fi if you are prompted on which method to use for tethering.
Purchase a tethering package. The iPhone may prompt you to enable internet tethering for your account. This will require you to contact your wireless provider and purchase a tethering package. Once you have purchased a tethering package repeat the steps in this guide. If you are not prompted to purchase a tethering package, skip this step.
iOS4 Tethering: Jailbroken Method

Tethering with the iPhone 4 and iOS4 can be easily accomplished with the built-in tethering functionality. The built-in tethering function is both limited and requires a subscription to a tethering package with your wireless carrier. Jailbroken users can enjoy the use of tethering without a tethering package and without limitations using a great piece of software called "MyWi".
Open Cydia.
Open Cydia by clicking the Cydia icon on your iPhone's home screen.

Search for MyWi. Tap "Search" on the navigation bar of Cydia. Type "MyWi" in the search box and tap search.
Download MyWi. Tap MyWi to bring up the install option. Select "Install" in the upper right corner. Select "Confirm" in the
upper right corner to begin the download and installation.
Launch MyWi. Tap the MyWi icon on the home screen of your iPhone to launch MyWi.
Enable Tethering. Tap the slide next to "Enable Tethering" to turn tethering on in iOS4 or on the iPhone 4. Set the Wi-Fi name to anything you would like. You may also set security when using Wi-Fi tethering for iOS4 and iPhone 4 with MyFi.

Apple iPhone 3GS: Show iPhone Battery Percentage Remaining (tips. tool, iOS, "iPhone Repair"

The little battery icon in the taskbar at the upper right of the iPhone screen is okay at giving a rough indication of battery life remaining. Unfortunately when it comes to details the icon is not so useful.
Luckily there are ways to display the exact percentage of power remaining on your iPhone battery. There are two different methods you can use to achieve this goal depending on your iPhone hardware.

Apple has included this feature in iPhone OS 3.0 for users with the iPhone 3GS. To turn on the battery percentage indicator touch Settings -> General -> Usage -> Battery Percentage -> ON.

These menus will only appear on the iPhone 3GS hardware. If you have iPhone OS 3.0 on an older iPhone there's still a way to make this happen.

First, the iPhone you would like to see battery percentage on must be jailbroken. If this applies to you, then simply install SBSettings from Cydia. This application will give you the power to turn on the battery percentage in the taskbar.

After SBSettings is installed, swipe on the taskbar to bring up your toggles and touch the More button. Select Extras & Options at the bottom of the screen. Turn Numeric Battery ON. Click the home button and your battery percentage will appear.

Now you too can freak out looking for a power outlet when your battery is down to 3% remaining!  (Brought to you by Abby Technology Limited)

DropBox 1.3 for iPhone, iPad now in App Store (Apple iPhone File Sharing, Auckland, "Abby Technology")

http://tiny.cc/Drop-Box
DropBox for iPhone and iPad has just been updated to version 1.3 and you can get it now from the iTunes App Store. Like Apple’s own MobileMe iDisk, it lets you store files online and sync them locally as well. Unlike iDisk it’s lightning fast, provides versioning (like Time Machine), and does a host of other great stuff as well. New features and fixes in 1.3 include:
  • UI re-design with numerous visual enhancements including retina display support
  • File caching (no need to re-download files you’ve already viewed!)
  • Fullscreen landscape file viewing on iPad
  • Finish uploads and downloads while in the background
  • Create folders
  • Bug fix for viewing CSV and some broken HTML files
The app is free, the service is free up to 2GB and then you can pay for 50GB and 100GB options. If you try out the new version, let us know what you think. Personally, I’m not digging the new UI yet, but I’ll give it some time…  The iPhone App link is located here.

Abby Technology Tips: How to Sync Google Calendar with iPhone 3GS? (Power User Tips & Tricks, Auckland)

Our engineers and admin managers at Abby Technology Limited (3071547) use Gmail and Google Calendar extensively. iPhone’s native Calendar is nice but Google Calendar lets us access our events from our computers as well. Plus, I have tons of contacts already filled out in my Gmail that would be nice to have them in my iPhone.
With Google Calendar, you can also subscribe to other Calendar (CalDAV) compatible services like Remember the Milk, Anyvite, etc.

How to Sync Google Calendar with iPhone?

With this little tip, you can integrate Google Calendar right into your iPhone Calendar using Google Sync. I am going to assume you have upgraded to OS 3.0 and get to 2.2 later.
iPhone OS Version 3.0
  1. Open Settings in iPhone
  2. Open Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap on Add Account
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange

  5. In the Email field, enter your full Gmail address
  6. You can leave the Domain field empty
  7. In Username, enter your full email address
  8. In Password, enter your Google password
  9. Hit Next and enter m.google.com in Server field

  10. Press Next
  11. Select the Google Services you want to Sync – only Calendar & Contacts supported at the moment
  12. Choose ‘Keep on my iPhone‘ to keep your existing contacts and events in your iPhone.
  13. And you are done!
Gotchas
  • Google Calendar and Contacts will automatically sync if you have Push (Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data) enabled. Push settings can also drain your battery faster so play with it and see how your battery holds up with various intervals.
  • You can choose which of your Google Calendars to Sync by going to http://m.google.com/sync in Safari
  • You can only create 1 Exchange ActiveSync account. So if you already use one for work you are out of luck. Thanks Apple!
  • After the Sync is done, you chose to see All Calendars or just specific Calendars in iPhone

  • With iPhone OS 2.2, you won’t see the screen where you can chose to Keep your existing Contacts in iPhone. You have to heed the warning that you will lose your iPhone data and hit Sync twice.
Hope you were able to set up your Google Calendar and Contacts in your iPhone with these instructions. Just give us a yell or contact us via our site http://go.to/abby should you need help or more information!  Cheers!

Power Saving Tips

#1 - Always go to the home screen before putting your iPhone in standby mode. If you are running an App and hit the Sleep/Wake button to turn the screen off, the application will still be running in the background and can severely drain your battery.
#2 - Disable 3G on long calls (Ex: business calls, calling your cable company, or calling ATT Customer Service ). Call quality on EDGE is quite good compared to 3G.
#3 - If your apartment / house has a weak 3G signal, definitely turn off 3G until you leave your home. My apartment has a very weak 3G signal. The phone switches networks constantly if I have 3G enabled, which murders my battery. I use EDGE while I'm at home w/ WiFi for data. When I leave my home, I turn on 3G.
#4 - Enable WiFi in your apartment / house when WiFi is available. Use WiFi instead of 3G or EDGE for web browsing. WiFi is (with a strong signal) faster than 3G or EDGE. WiFi also uses significantly less battery power than any cellular network.
#5 - If you only use WiFi hotspots, keep WiFi disabled. Enable WiFi when you enter a hotspot.
#6 - If you don't need GPS, disable Location Services. When Location Services is enabled, your GPS antenna is activated. The GPS antenna will continue to drain battery life, even if you aren't using an application that needs Location Services.
#7 - Disable Push notifications, unless needed. It is estimated that your battery life will decrease by 20% (about an hour) with Push enabled. Increasing your fetch interval to an hour or above will also increase battery life.
#8 - Disable Bluetooth if you have no Bluetooth devices (duh). If you're like me and use Bluetooth in your car, I would just leave Bluetooth ON for convenience so you don't have to enable Bluetooth every time you go for a drive. More trouble than it's worth.
#9 - Using App Store programs may HEAVILY decrease battery life. Games (especially 3D) are notorious for killing your battery. Don't be surprised to get 2 - 3 hour usage statistics while gaming.
#10 - Enable Auto Brightness
#11 - If you have no service at all, use Airplane mode. With no service, your phone will constantly look for a signal, which kills your battery very quickly. Airplane Mode will let you use your phone, but you won't be able to dial or receive calls.
#12 - Make sure Auto-Lock is set @ 1 minute.
#13 - If you mainly use your phone for talking / texting / email / gaming, using EDGE will offer a similar experience, but your battery life will increase significantly.
